PXL_20210414_190925546.MP.jpg Thought this might be of interest in terms of the three phases underway so far

I had always wondered what those black pipes to the left of trailer would be used for, and now we know - a large construction site requires a lot of, hmm, "capacity".

Taken April 15th.  Note the new Tyee Rd. - Esquimalt Rd intersection.

Note the new awkward right turns cars now have to make to get onto Tyee from Esquimalt.

Eliminating the slip lane here was a solution to a problem that didn't exist.

I disagree.  This corner previously had cyclists coming up the hill at slow speed merge left into the vehicle right turn lane, take the entire lane, then merge left again into the new westbound bike lane for esquimalt.  It was horrendously awkward and singularly unique in the city.  This is certainly much safer for both cars and cyclists.

I agree with m3m, this sucks like 1% more for cars but makes it 90% less sphincter-clenching for cyclists. I drove around it and it's fine. It's fine. There's nothing here any driver who knows how to use a steering wheel can't handle.

May not be a problem today, but likely would be a problem when Dockside is built out and there's an increase in foot, bicycle, and vehicle traffic. Slip lanes are great for moving vehicles quickly, not so great for moving people safely.

Yeah as a cyclist coming up the hill this is so much better. I have almost lost my left elbow many times with people not yielding to me crossing that lane. It was a really dangerous situation.

Thanks for the pics!

I don't understand how completion for this is slated for mid-2023... Seems to be making incredible progress

I rode up Esquimalt and I can say with certainty that for cyclists, it's nicer not having to contend with people trying to get into the turning lane.

The first building is going to progress more rapidly now that they've poured the first floor.

As they were removing and stacking the wall forms this morning, the pile of stacked forms fell over.

There was a site-wide meeting of almost all the workers today. Gives you some idea of the number of workers currently on-site.

The below ground floors and first few floors take a long time to build since they are typically unique. The construction technique uses scaffolding with beams on the lowest levels. Next they will use fixed size platforms about the size of a sheet of plywood, with large jacks holding them up (similar to what you find in basements).

Once they hit about the fourth floor the configuration is likely the same until the top of the building. For those floors they often use trusses supporting a table since they are much less labor intensive. The interesting part is the removal. The floor is poured on top. A few weeks later they lower the jacks a bit on the trusses, then use the crane to tug the table partway out of the building. Then they reattach the crane straps, and tug out and up. The form is then placed several floors above. I'm guessing they will be closing Tyee to traffic on days when the forms are pulled.

The tables/trusses are being assembled in the yard, put on a truck for a short distance and then craned to the top of the building.

First picture shows the first table/truss in place on the left side. The second picture shows the mini-platform system with the floor form almost complete. The last picture shows the trusses being assembled in the yard.
