My note about his being ill doesn't fit the literal interpretation of "conjecture" or "hearsay" ... in that the information was shared directly with me by a person who spoke regularly with Mr. Draeger, and to whom Mr. Draeger repeatedly noted that he was quite ill.

"2nd hand information" might be more appropriate nomenclature.

I hope an alternate development plan is proposed. The last thing needed in this part of town is another "heritage" vacant lot.

Victoria BC – Detectives from the VicPD Major Crime Unit are continuing their investigation into the suspicious fire at the site of the old Plaza Hotel.

On May 6th, a devastating fire occurred at 603 Pandora Avenue and from the early stages, VicPD officers have been working in concert with the Victoria Fire Department. For more than a week, officers have been at the site examining the debris and, at this time, the care and control of the property has been handed over to the owners. The investigation is ongoing and we continue to work with the Victoria Fire Department. To protect the integrity of the investigation, no further details will be released about the search, or investigation.

Mike Draeger, the building caretaker, remains unaccounted for.

These type of investigations are lengthy and an appropriate amount of resources continues to be dedicated to investigating the origin of the fire.

In the meantime a salvage team working the site will be able to recover multiple components of the destroyed building which include two round polished columns, undamaged white glazed brick, heavy structural timbers not damaged by the fire, cast iron structural columns and sidewalk prisms.

A rear wall of the Victoria Plaza Hotel remains standing following a May 6th fire that destroyed the historic complex. In the third week of May West Vancouver-based Ocean Gate Developments formally cancelled a proposal to redevelop the hotel and restore its façade, but the company now vows to move forward with a new vision for the site under the direction of Merrick Architecture.

It will be interesting to see what is now proposed for this site. Is suggesting whatever it is be named "The Phoenix" too obvious?

Have they not located Mike Draeger or his remains?

The Canadian Press via Glacier Media via CTV and/or CFAX:

The three-storey, 108-year-old vacant structure had been designated a heritage site and was to be transformed from a former strip club into commercial space and as many as 100 residential suites.

It was four-storeys tall, but that's beside the point. The fact that the author of this piece actually thought the whole thing was a strip club is a little concerning.

Who knew the world's largest strip club operated in downtown Victoria, eh? Three-storeys tall, and in a heritage building, no less! I bet whoever wrote this thought to themselves that they wished they had visited the place before it burned down.

No sign of him or his body.

The site is no longer being searched for signs of his remains.

The math seems to add up to the fact that he wasn't there during the fire.

This fire was arson per Vic PD and they are continuing to look for the missing caretaker:

If I recall correctly there was a nearby shop owner that knew him that said he was ill.

Presumably cadaver dogs would have come upon a scent if a body was in the rubble?

It seems the debris is going to be here for a while yet.

A pile of debris still sits at the site of the old Plaza Hotel three months after fire ravaged the historic building...the debris will stay there until late fall, possibly even Christmas, as the building's owner works to obtain engineering reports and permits needed for the clean-up...The cost of the clean-up is estimated at half a million dollars by the building's owner, Nick Askew, who says he's on the hook for that expense...

It now appears the owner wants to build a new hotel at this site

...The building's owner tells CTV News he hopes to build a new hotel and predicts that would take three years to complete once the remains of the previous one are finally cleared away...

so what do they do with the missing guy?  does he ever get declared dead?  or is he a suspect or person of interest still?  or just a missing person?  i suppose it's possible he caused the fire at the hotel then commited suicide elsewhere.  or he's in mexico.

Missing. Can't issue a death certificate without a cause of death (see the bizarre case of Laura Babcock, who was murdered according to the courts but has not been declared dead)

Is that the legislation in place in BC though? We have the Presumption of Death Act here that basically says that if a next of kin applies to the courts to have you declared dead because you've been missing for so long and are presumed dead, that the courts can issue a death certificate.

Some more info here on the process in BC: https://www2.gov.bc....sing-person.pdf

Same process, Ontario has the Declarations of Death Act. The family can go back to court to argue that Laura is dead, but it's an odd process when the court has already found someone guilty of murdering Laura. So the process is there, but the family wants the Act changed to not require the court process when the court has already accepted that the individual has died.
