I had no idea we have/had beavers around here. Total news to me about them wanting to kill 8 of them on South Pender.

So, re the beavers on South Pender.

Parks Canada says they threaten their dam, that's fair.  Parks Canada says that moving them causes problems elsewhere, for other wildlife or other water systems, so moving them is not an option.

The residents group sounds like they just want to keep wrecking the dams the beavers build.  That sounds fine, but expensive and in the end does that not just kill them anyway?  They build the dams for survival in some form.

I submit they could probably be trapped and transported to somwhere in northeast BC.  That would likely cost $75,000.

Dunno.

Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain when we can't knock off a few beavers.

OK, so here is the deal.  The beavers create A)  their lodge, but also, B) dams up and downstream from their lodge.

The reason they damn streams is to flood areas near the trees they want to eat.  That's what they eat, inner tree bark.  And they flood the area so as to get to the trees, but still be close to water to get away from predators, if need be.  Without a water escape, they are kinda lame travellers on land, so the wolves etc. get them.

Somebody simply needs to remind the South Pender beavers that there are no predators on Pender that will hurt them.  So just go over land to get that tree.

I haven't been to Pender to check my trap line since I lost my snowshoes in the Blizzard of '96.

Is beaver fever really caused by beavers or just another old beaver leader tail?
