Why not at SOFMC? Len Barrie's connections?

Canucks training here 'a done deal'
Cleve Dheensaw, Times Colonist
Published: Saturday, May 26, 2007
The NHL's Vancouver Canucks will conduct both their prospects and main training camps in Greater Victoria from Sept. 5-18, says Len Barrie, president and CEO of the Bear Mountain resort.

Canucks will stay at the Bear Mountain resort and hold practice sessions at Bear Mountain Arena, with the annual Blue/White intra-squad game to be staged at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre on Sept. 16.

"It's a done deal and we're really excited about it," said Barrie, majority owner of the junior Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL, and a former NHL and minor-pro player.

"We have no information to announce at this point regarding our training camp," said Stephanie Maniago, of the Canucks' media relations department.

But Barrie confirmed the Canucks are coming in September.

"I approached Steamer [Canucks director of player development Stan Smyl] and said let's get this done," said Barrie. "We've got everything they need -- a great place for them to stay, with golf right there, and a five-minute van ride to the arena for training, and the big rink downtown for the intra-squad game."

But nothing has been signed, said Rick Hanak, facilities manager for the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, which includes Bear Mountain Arena.

"The [Canucks] have contacted us but we have no contract in place, yet," said Hanak, adding, "until I get a contract in hand, nothing is a done deal for me."

Victoria has hosted NHL training camps in the past.

The Los Angeles Kings regularly held their NHL training camp in Victoria in the 1980s and into the 1990s, including 1988, when Wayne Gretzky was entering his first season with the Kings.
