A while back I nailed a good meat shop (Glenwood Meats in Langford-- awesome all around). Now, I'm looking for a good place to buy fish: decent prices, decent selection and most of all, good quality. Does anyone have any favorites ?

All the best,

Good question. Neptune Seafood on Antique Row recently transformed into an antique store. I don't even know if Victoria has a seafood retail outlet.

Maybe that could be a component of a new public market, Seattle style:

Well there is FAS in James Bay which is excellent for quality and selection but their prices are slightly higher. Then ther is the boats on the wharf. I have noticed that many of the supermarkets that used to have good quality selctions like Save on have gone back to just having the packaged stuff. Fairways has the best selections of all seafood from around the world but I am not sure on quality or even what some of those fish are. Still I have been adventurous and but a couple to try before.

Right. Right. Everyone forget what I said about Glenwood Meats. Please don't go there :-D

Everyone else: thanks for the tips. These are good: I didn't know that the place on Fort St. had closed up. There used to be a good one out on the Langford strip (near 6 Mile), but it's gone too.

Fire causes heavy damage at James Bay fish plant

Times Colonist
Published: Wednesday, March 12, 2008

A fire has heavily damaged a fish processing plant in James Bay on Erie Street.

Flames could be seen rising from the plant's roof around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

The plant is located across the street from the park at Fisherman's Wharf.

So I am guessing there will be a special on smoked salmon and blackened snapper for a while.

Allow me to direct you to Sidney for fresh fish. Satellite located at the end of the Sidney Pier at the end of Beacon Ave - near the new hotel - is as spectacular as FAS, but in a low rent kind of way. It's the freshest seafood laid out on ice, ready to purchase. Crab is out of tank, which I've heard is a much better way to buy them. And it's all from our local waters. I usually head out there from downtown with my cooler and load up on whatever is fresh. Be forewarned it's cash only.
Fas I rely on for my Sunday or after work seafood cravings but when Sidney is in the itinerary, Satellite is the best.
