The CRD has released it's 2006 population estimates for the Victoria Metro Area (VMA) and entire CRD.

The VMA essentially includes everything on Vancouver Island attached to the CRD, whereas the entire CRD includes some of the Gulf Islands.

Of note is View Royal's inclusion into the "core" by the CRD as opposed to west comms. This further shows that VR is very much like an extension of Esquimalt although some people think otherwise ;)

The full document is at: http://crd.bc.ca/reg... ... ROW_06.pdf

The VMA population increased from 338,448 in 2005 to 343,676 in 2006. That's an increase of over 4,900. Since 2002, the estimated population increase is almost 17,000.

The CRD population increased from 354,206 in 2005 to 359,439 in 2006 which is an increase of just over 5,200.

So essentially the Capital Region has a population of almost 344,000 but expect to see a much lower figure when the official census numbers are released. Census results are considered as the "official" indicator of population although regional estimates like the CRD's are reliable enough between census counts.

i always find it funny how they classify it along with esquimalt, really they should think of it more as colwood, as there is nothing in VR that relates to esquimalt really.

cept the indian reserve, which they have no controll of, this is prolly the reason why more attention is being focused on the other end of VR. six mile area, my area and thetis lake area.

Hey Vic is over 80 000!!!!!

We hit 70 000 back in 1988 so it took us 18 years to add 10 000 people hopefully it won't take that long to get to 90 000.

It has a whole new look!

The population density would be about 4084 per square km in the city proper. Not bad at all.

It is interesting to note that with in the CRD, Salt Spring is closing in on Sidney's population.

The island alone is over 10,000 people. I remember in High School when Salt Spring was in the 4,000 range.

Salt Spring has become quite a bedroom community of Victoria.

It's too bad they couldn't build a bridge.

It's also strange that this island is part of The CRD, when Shawnigan and Mill Bay aren't. That to me is stupid.

when it comes to municipal divisions and civic political boundries and entities in the CRD, a LOT of things could be described as such...

The last thing Saltspring wants is a bridge, I'm sure.
The CRD is weirdly shaped, almost like a boomerang, with one arm running out to Port Renfrew, and another going out to the Gulf Islands.

That's why it needs to encompass the Malahat, Shawnigan, Bamberton and MillBay to startwith.

Yeah, the topography naturally lends itself to making much of the south Cowichan area part of the CRD.

That might happen within a decade, especially if transit is extended across the 'hat.

I think the way census Canada counts metro areas is if 50% of the worker pool of a community works within another community (in this case s. Cowichan communities employed within the CRD). A TC article from last year indicated that 49% of workers in s Cowichan communities commute into the CRD for employment.
