The resurrection of a venue with such storied history is good news for the performing arts community in Victoria, which has been struggling to rebuild its live music scene since COVID-related regulations were lifted. Many of the live music venues and nightclubs in the city, who spoke to the Times Colonist on the condition of anonymity, said attendance numbers at live music events are down overall compared to pre-pandemic levels.

July Talk will support its first album of new material in three years with a cross-Canada tour that brings the three-time Juno Award winners to Victoria next year.

The Toronto band’s Remember Never Before tour, named after its forthcoming fourth album, will stop at the Royal Theatre on March 28, the band’s lone Vancouver Island date. Crown Lands will open the show.

Crown Lands! Now that’s a Canadian band name if there ever was one!

FYI still lots of decent seats left for Sloan at the Charlie White Theatre, March 2.  Opted for email tickets - looks like they want me to print all four pages out and bring them, and also a $9 "internet convenience fee" lol.

^ Every seat is a decent seat in that venue. Nice and intimate.

Can't remember that last time I was sitting in a seat for a Sloan show, but I guess they are getting older too!

300 seats! I guess that helps to explain the relatively high ticket prices.

So that's why the library shut down.

^ Looking at that list, I don't think I even know Future.  I might struggle to name 3 Drake songs by name.  Actually I might struggle to name 3 songs by anyone on the list, except Elvis, Swift and Glee Cast.  It's interesting that there are more artists, more songs produced and published daily now (60,000 new songs added to Spotify daily), than any time in history.  But the top of that list are all 2000's artists, except Elvis.

Its called aging :).

Aside from Elvis - obviously - I couldn't name one single song by anyone on that list. I've never even heard of Glee Cast, Future or L'il Baby but I strongly suspect I'm not missing a thing in regards. I'm like Scotty in that Star Trek Next Gen episode where he was stuck in a transporter matrix for 77 years. And happily so....

Glee Cast would be songs that appeared in Glee the TV show. They covered, and revived lots. Like Stranger Things is also doing (Running Up That Hill).

ABBA waited 40 years between their 2 most recent studio albums. Don't count any of the above out just yet.

Those guys all have lots of money. But why not make the odd album from time to time? Would a new album hurt their current catalog sales or touring revenue, even if it was a flop? You can always hire songwriters and producers to do most of the hard part.

It’s likely a few things, like the bands no longer being together, medical issues preventing getting together to make an album, living in different continents, and copyright restrictions on who can or can’t use the name of the band, or how it can be used, etc.

All those bands are still together. If not literally touring or recording. Although looking through the list, I think most are performing.

Oh, I thought maybe nobody had heard from them in a while.

Has there ever been a band that released better music decades after their peak?

By definition, that’s a bit tough. ^

Well, if most workers have a peak, then you’d likely want to look for a band that broke up or died.

Cher had a massive hit years after her peak. “Believe”. And if you can believe it, that was 24 years ago.

Yes, that’s one example. Anybody else? Usually the new albums are awful, and feel contrived.
