I think Napster did that. iTunes copied it.

Justin Bieber sells entire back catalogue of songs to Hipgnosis Song Management

https://www.cbc.ca/n...nosis-1.6724329

In a statement shared with CBC News, Hipgnosis's founder and CEO Merck Mercuriadis said the Bieber deal was "among the biggest deals ever made for an artist under the age of 70."

"Such is the power of his incredible catalogue that has almost 82 million monthly listeners and over 30 billion streams on Spotify alone," Mercuriadis, who hails from Middleton, N.S., said.

Took a quick rip over to the little mainland yesterday to a) check out the Marina for one last meal b) take in Sloan playing at the Winspear centre in Sidney and c) save money!

I’ve been a big fan since day one, over 30 years ago and have seen these guys play countless times. I think every tour and then some. With 13 albums out, there have been a lot of tours. And remember, in the early 90’s there was no YouTube, bands were forced to play live and couldn’t rely on “counts”, especially independent Canadian ones.

Always a great show, and last night didn’t disappoint. Double set, new album mostly and then back catalogue. Couple mistakes made by the band, but they corrected and rocked it out! These guys are all in their mid-50’s.

The venue, however, what an odd choice. They usually play something more like the Capital Ballroom, but it was either booked or they figured there wouldn’t be demand to make it worthwhile. I think they would have sold more seats if it was a better venue.

Sound was substandard for sure, and the room just isn’t right for the band. For example, tomorrow they are playing the Commodore ballroom. Bar area was weird, merch area weird, lobby uncomfortable and strangely nobody asked to see any tickets.

Overall, band 8/10, venue 5/10.

The Weeknd took home multiple awards. He won artist of the year; songwriter of the year and pop album of the year for Dawn FM; and single of the year for Sacrifice. The global superstar wasn't in the room to accept the awards, though he leads the 2023 Juno nominations with six nods. He previously won artist of the year in 2015, 2016 and 2021.

Maybe if he never shows up or acknowledges any Juno Awards, he should not be nominated in the future.

Yacht rock progenitors, the Doobie Brothers, have added a Canadian leg of the band’s 50th Anniversary Tour.

Kicking off in Halifax on Oct. 13, the band winds down the cross-Canada dates with shows at Kelowna’s Prospera Place on Oct. 27 and the Abbotsford Centre on Oct. 28.

Featuring veteran members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McPhee, it’s the first tour in more than 25 years with this lineup. Given this is the band that brought such classics as Takin’ it to the Streets, Black Water and China Grove to the airwaves over the decades, it’s sure to be a hit-laden show.

Simmons and Johnston are both 74.  They actually formed in 1970.

For comparison, Rolling Stones formed in 1962, and Jagger and Richards are both 79.

Yacht rock?

Yes, it's a genre.

Otherwise known as adult contemporary from the 70's and 80's.

Now he just won album of the year.  He's now #2 in all-time Juno Award history.

No-show of course, and nobody to accept on his behalf.

Odd guy.
