Letterman was epic. Once in a lifetime opportunity for me, a lifelong fan. The man looks good, appears very fit and healthy and was on point the whole night, a master of his craft.
He did his own intro, made some fun of Trump of course, then comes out and tells a few jokes and some stories before moving to a podium where he did a short recap of his life and career, for the few folks in the sold out Queen Elizabeth theatre who didn’t know his background.
He really went all the way back, back to his younger school days, talked about his mom and son, showed some footage from his radio days, tv weatherman days, the stint on the Mary Tyler Moore show which lead to a call from Carson, and the rest is self evident.
He did mention Stanley Park, Smithers, his last time performing in Vancouver on Bruno Gerussi’s talk show. Of course the crowd ate these Canadiana references up, my American friend Zach who was with me didn’t get it. “Who’s’ Stanley Park?”
Next up a very special guest comes out - Paul Shaffer, who I might add hasn’t changed one bit. He sat down at the Steinway, and introduced the Canucks anthem singer who led the crowd in O Canada, huge Canadian flag lowered centre stage. There had been two standing ovations by this point.
The rest of the evening was Dave interviewing Zach Galafianakis who was pretty good, but took a while to warm up. He also mentioned he took two ferries to get there. He most definitely avoided telling us which island he came from, but it’s a short list. Most folks seem to think he’s holed up on Denman with his family enjoying his millions, but he specially mentioned going to thrifty foods. Salt spring is the only gulf island with one of those, but I don’t think he lives here. What do you think? At the end, he presented Dave with a tea towel from the island he lives on, which my friend figured meant it was salt spring for sure until I told him that every gulf island has a weavers guild, by law.
They closed the evening with a rousing rendition, again on the Steinway grand, of “It’s RainIng Men” - which Paul himself co-wrote in 1979. Bizarre ending, but right on brand and pretty funny to watch Dave and Zach react to this.
10/10 performance, would have been 12/10 if not for the terribly uncomfortable seats and some bush league audio issues.
This was a late add on to the Just for Laughs comedy festival, which I have not partaken in before but we did some wandering pre show and I think I might have to take a closer look next year. Some pretty funny events happening.
Sorry, no photos. Cameras were not welcome during the show, but at the very end I think everyone except me whipped out their phones and took what they could of the men leaving the stage. I think my friend got some photos, just not very good.
Dinner at Tsuki sushi a couple blocks away, then lunch at the Flyjng Beaver before the puddle jump home. All excellent.
