If I lived 45 minutes from downtown work, I'd love to just grab a bus/train and spend that 45 minutes reading the paper, or something else productive. Just driving seems like a waste of time although I suppose you can listen to talk/news radio and get informed. But I find it repeats evey 15 minutes or so in order to capture a moving group of commuters. Reading the paper is better.

trouble is, I'm at least 10k from a bus stop.

Actaully, the real trouble is I'm drunk and have to work in a few hours...but that's off topic :P

Marcat, I like your analysis. We flipped it the other way. We have to work five days per week and will play in the outdoors a maximum of three. (I can run from my front door wherever, but it's nice to get out on trails). Living in town means we sometimes drive to go play, but do less of the driving than when 45 min each way was obligatory ten times per week.

When we moved to Victoria we first rented in Vic West. We stayed there for 2 years and the rent was cheap, so was the crappy apartment that came with it. However that allowed us to save up for our first home.

We then bought in Langford, 3.5 years ago in a new townhouse developement. There were hardly any other houses around us and there was some nice treed areas and a school close by so we could walk the dogs and let them play. About 2 years ago that whole area started to get developed. It doesn't even look close to the same as what it did when we moved in.

Last November we decided that we would move out of this area and look for a single family home. We ended up making over 100k in 2.5 years, not too bad. This allowed us to do what we wanted.

We always found ourselves playing in the Metchosin/Sooke area so we started to look there. Can't beat the housing costs that way either. Larger property and less costs.

Yes, driving EVERYDAY into the city was a concern for my wife that works right downtown. I work from a home based office so I only need to head downtown once every 2 weeks or so.

The bus service from here is great so I use that when I need it.

Anyway.. we had our doubts about actually living in Sooke and I can easily tell you that it was the best decision we ever made. It was actually too bad that we didn't land here when we came to the island. We love the community, we've met more people and are doing a lot more for the community then we ever did in Langford or Vic West.

I also feel that if there is a slight twist in the housing market, which is starting to happen - not sure how far it will go, that Sooke was probably a good place that wouldn't get hit as much as places closer to downtown.

The prices out here are 200k less than the average in town home. So I think it will only help raise prices. At least that is what I'm hoping for. :)

We have seen an increase in fuel costs of course, but only about $20 a week more than Langford to Victoria. But our property taxes are less out here.

I guess the point is each to their own. I've never loved living right in the city and I've always loved to visit and then go back home where it's quieter.

But for us, this was a great decision.

...that's a breakthrough that could make electric cars a lot more workable.
