What sort of roof would you like? Pitched roofs generally look pretty awful on larger buildings, or at least in Victoria they tend to go with the "I'm just a really tall multi-family house!" sort of look, or just have a tacky decorate pitched roof around the edge then a sunken flat roof behind.
Some sort of large shed style roof and some angles/lofts might look cool though like the condo here http://goo.gl/maps/3xQCR
But give me a nice modern flat roof and simple if even bland contemporary architecture like this building over the pitched roof garbage in the Songhees.
Or at least USE the flat roof. Put a patio/garden up there, or break it up with an interesting mechanical penthouse and some layers. Often arbitrary height laws "force" an architect to do the whole "top of the building sliced off by a laser" look, which I believe was the case here.

This place just isn't getting any prettier as it nears completion.

A few years ago every big building had a pointy hat roof. The trauma of that era resides still, deep within our souls.

from a developer perspective, sloped roofs cost money and its something most people don't care about. Look around, I can't think of any mid or high rises with sloped roofs (wood frame doesn't count in my opinion as its almost no cost difference)
People care about interior and exterior finishes. They want to see cultured stone, better cabinets, countertops, floors and that is where I want to make the building really stand out.
What would you rather have plastic laminate countertops and a pointy roof or granite countertops and a flat roof?

The only flat roof utilized on a contemporary building with a "modernist" aesthetic I can think of is the Paragon building where they put a roof garden. Any others?
