It’s the thumbs. Or lack of them.

Just need octopus friendly technologies/infrastructure, as we start to communicate the playing field will level

Elderly pig's future uncertain after complaint to SPCA

The 18-year-old animal is a popular attraction alongside the Lochside Trail, but the owners say she may have to be euthanized after complaint

Now that there’s been a second complaint, they fear they will continue to face complaints, resulting in more unaffordable vet fees.

As a result, Frans said, they may end up euthanizing the pig this week.

Pig owners ask for extension to SPCA euthanization notice

The owners, who have a farm adjacent to the Lochside Trail, were told on July 5 to have the 18-year-old pig checked by a veterinarian or euthanized within five days

Greater Victoria residents are offering to cover the costs for a vet check and treatment for a pig that’s the subject of a B.C. SPCA order.

When Ben Obal opened his family’s farm stand in Courtenay Friday morning he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“It’s just sad and I’ve lived here my whole life right,” said Obal, who owns Bates Beach Farm Market with his father, Mike.

According to Mike Obal, thieves took everything in the stand. From cases of produce they’d grown to coolers full of pies they’d baked, to stacks of homemade soups and even artisan soaps.

“They cleaned out our cooler, took probably 30, 40 dozen eggs from us,” added Mike.

Besides the produce, thieves also made off with electronics that kept the business running.“So frustrating, and then they take tubs of ice cream, frozen ice cream – which I’m thinking unless you’ve got a big commercial freezer – we’re talking pick-up truck loads. This is what we’re talking about,” Mike told CHEK News on Saturday.

He estimates more than $6,000 in produce was taken from the stand, that has donated truckloads of produce to local food banks in the past. The theft is hitting especially hard right now, said the owner, after a year of rising fuel and fertilizer prices that have reduced profits dramatically.

The reminder of winter came as the annual Greater Victoria Flower Count — the region’s way of bragging about its weather to the rest of Canada — launched Monday.

Counting doesn’t officially start until March 6, by which time the snow should be gone. For more information, go to flowercount.com.

Oh, brother.

It’s no longer the flower count that matters.

It's a clever, cheap marketing gimmick that often gets headlines or at least a mention in eastern media.  I like it.
