Victoria’s parades will march on, minus a special man.

The death of venerable parade organizer Ron Butlin in September at the age of 89 left the city’s Victoria Day and Christmas parades needing someone new to take them on. Both are run by the Greater Victoria Festival Society and, as society general manager, Butlin was their public face for 21 years.

After being approached about a year ago, Kelly Kurta has emerged as Butlin’s successor, as general manager and point person for the parades. The 45-year-old, who grew up in Victoria and attended Oak Bay High, is in the process of moving back to the city from Vancouver with her family.

She is branch manager for the Vancouver office of Journey Freight International and has extensive involvement with charities such as Ronald McDonald House.

PRESS RELEASE

Greater Victoria Festival Society Announces Launch of Website!

Victoria, February 23, 2015:  The Greater Victoria Festival Society moves into the future with the launch of its new

website www.gvfs.ca.  This new site will be a hub of information for the Society’s popular parades as well as potential

new events.  Please join us Sunday March 1 from 5:30-8:30pm at the Yates Street Taphouse as we launch our first

ever Website and offer a “Sneak Preview” of what lies ahead.

The Society’s two existing major events are the Island Farms Victoria Day and Island Farms Santa Light Parade.

These parades bring laughter and joy to the thousands of people lining Downtown Victoria streets every year!  They

help in collecting much needed food donations for the Mustard Seed Food Bank along the Christmas Parade Route

and they bring in over $1 million dollars in tourism funds throughout the City.

Our Future looks bright as we have recently appointed our new General Manager, Kelly Kurta, along with many new

board members who you will meet on Sunday.  They are creatively working to bring more fantastic and unique events

to our beautiful City.

The Greater Victoria Festival Society was incorporated under the Society Act on March 3, 1992.  Our purpose is to

engage in any activity that is beneficial to the community as a whole, while developing and promoting Civic Spirit and

Pride with the creation of festivals, parades and special events.

"A positive collaborative effort with our stakeholders will ensure synergies are created to facilitate year round activities

for our locals and our visitors.  “

The Greater Victoria Festival Society is nearly finished rolling out two new ideas for event development and will look

to showcase our marketing strategies with our stakeholders in the course of the next month, ensuring a collaborative

effort on all parts.

Please rsvp to gvfsvic@gmail.com.  Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

By "moves into the future" I assume they mean "finally enters the 21st Century".

Well, we know Ron Butlin seemed to do well without one.

Jesus Christ, right now it's five golf carts with Canadian flags followed by five yellow cabs with yellow balloons stuck on them. This is the new and improved parade?

And yes, the derelict Tang's Pagoda parking lot once again serves as the backdrop.

One mediocre entry doesn't make it a crappy parade.  But at 3hrs I'm glad I'm not sitting on the sidewalk watching it.

The problem is they get a good buck from the corporate entries ($300 vs. $75 from non-profits).

I went to the free pancake breakfast hosted by the Tally Ho, it was pretty good.

I don't know why CHEK does not film opposite city hall.

This is the first time I recall seeing full patch HA riding in the parade. Related to the new clubhouse?

It's embarrassing really how awful the backdrop of the parade looks for anyone who is not local and only sees in on TV and it's been this way for as long as I can remember.

Maybe 20 years ago it was easier, since it's near the physical TV station.   Surely now...

I've never paid much attention to the TV coverage of the parade, but I thought that at one point, not that long ago (nineties?), they filmed outside City Hall.

How many?  On their own as a entry?

^ Jill is right. In the 1980s too, I think. The hosts were stationed at the corner of Douglas and Cormorant, across from City Hall. It doesn't make sense that they accept such a crappy background.

Don't be so sure.

Oh it's God-awful. And this year we were also treated to a giant pot leaf in the window of a bong shop across the street from the TC.

Of all the places that they could choose to promote our city, considering how often the hosts mentioned the seemingly constant flow of messages the station received from people watching from afar, they choose the absolute, hands down worst stretch of Douglas that the parade passes.

I get it, they want to catch the action immediately and not wait, but for those watching at home does it really matter if the action starts a little later? Are they worried someone will usurp the line-up or post photos of the action before their cameras get a chance to catch it?

Just a handful and they were in some charity entry.

It’s disappointing that CHEK can still only broadcast commercials and syndicated programming in High Definition.  Even its CBC News footage in the CHEK newscasts comes up fuzzy on my HD receiver.

Unless I’m watching CHEK’s broadcast of CBC Vancouver News at 6 or 11.

Watching the Parade today the live shots are in standard definition, but 80% of the inserts (commercials and promos) are in High Def.

Langford runs the bikers out of town, Victoria puts them in their parade.
