So the sign could have also read ...ongoing Efforts of aboriginal and non-aboriginal people of British Columbia to restore balanced relationships to the lands they call home.
I suggest the signs that follow incorporate such language. They are nice signs and a waste of good art otherwise....

The biggest problem is that those darned Indians didn't write anything down anywhere. 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians started writing stuff out. You'd think that when Indians were over there on vacation, touring the pyramids and stuff, they would have picked up on that.

In all seriousness, there is the possibility that ancient Egyptians, as unbelievable as it sounds, may have sailed to North America and started a colony in and around the Grand Canyon many thousands of years ago. Whether real or just lore nobody knows as the original story on the supposed discovery of artifacts was published well over 100 years ago and the artifacts have since disappeared. But in all seriousness nobody can say for certain who the real "first colonizers" of North America are. Perhaps even the peoples who crossed the Bering Strait came across other civilizations as they settled these lands -- who knows.

There have been mounds and ancient walls discovered across North America that do not line up with any known construction techniques of aboriginal tribes. These discoveries are enigmas and their constructors a forgotten people.

Mount Douglas park is a place very near and dear to my heart. Cuddled between subdivisions of Saanich on one side, and Victoria on the other, it’s a hill that provides panoramic views (on one of those rare clear days) of much of lower Vancouver Island. There’s a road going up to the top with a place to park your car- when I was 16, and bought my first car (a 1968 Rover 2000), it’s the first place I made out in my car with a girl.

Late comers

Slightly amusing but a little confusing as it implies "recentness". ;)

Easy.... "Non-aboriginal Canadians".

Certainly nothing wrong with it but not very catchy and perhaps a tad long.

Seems more likely that it came from the South

Cities
The Olmec cities were constructed around a central raised mound, which was used for religious ceremonies.
3 Major Cities
La Venta in Tabasco
Laguna de los Cerros in Veracruz
San Lorenzo in Tenochtitlan
Olmecs had 45 cities.

The lore doesn't relate the artifacts to having any resemblance to Olmec/Inca/Mayan artifacts -- and that's what's so mysterious. Here's a great piece on the issue of possible Egyptian voyages of discovery to North America. Archaeologists no longer refute the possibility of ancient civilizations sailing the world well before Columbus so anything is possible. 20 years ago this would have been a silly theory. Just goes to show how times change and raises the question of who traveled where tens of thousands of years ago.

Anyhow, perhaps this thread should get back on topic :)

And why exactly do we need a catchy term for non-aboriginal Canadians? I think both my edits on the sign verbiage sounded much better that what's there right now and is less confrontational than coining the term "settler people". If we need to invent terms for what something isn't, the dictionary is going to get much larger.... (It's too bad because it really is a nice sign)

Unfortunately after a few years of no maintenance it will look like crap.

Won't last that long. My guess is 3 months before it is defaced like any sign.

The settlers signs atop Mt. Tolmie, "From Fort to Capital" don't get defaced. Of course, they (it?) are metal though, you can acid-wash off any graffiti.

Gee, a non authorized sign installed in Saanich by an ad hoc self appointed cultural group on public land and supported by an elected politician from the City of Victoria has gone missing. How odd?

Send the bill to Ben Issett. His support and on site attendance was much heralded as to creating a "legitimate event". He might be too busy tho carving the new "Camosack" sign for the city so maybe not.

I noticed a new First Nations sign on Highway 17 today. It is underneath the existing sign that reads "Welcome to Victoria / Home of the Pacific Fleet".

The new sign says "Home of the Coast Salish Territories" or something similar.

So I see that all the local news outlets ran stories with a photo of Chief Andy Thomas.  But then they all removed the photos, and most replaced it with a mask logo.

Is there some type of native tradition to not run photos?

EDIT:  Oh, CHEK says this:

*Out of respect for cultural protocol, we are not using any images of him until he is memorialized.*

^No tradition that I know of. It seems unusual for all media outlets to swap out a photo.

Well, if you google the story, you will see google has all the old cache with the photos, so they changed them all after the initial publish, every single media outlet.  Well, TC, CHEK and Black Press, anyway.

Also seems like a bad idea, having hereditary chiefs, no?   Who gets to decide if that ever changes, nobody?

Also, he was 70, and it was a "sudden passing".   Seems odd not to have more info.
