What about horse drawn carriages? Don't those animals suffer by pulling tourists around all day in sometimes heavy traffic?

I can see carriages in a park where the animals are not subjected to traffic but here vehicles can so easily spook the horses.

Ya, I guess it's hard to draw the line.  You know what we do with fish, right?  We haul them up in nets and let them slowly suffocate to death in the hold.

But look, rodeo animals are obviously stressed, they are running in absolute fear.  Solely for our entertainment.  Why not replace it with some MMA or boxing, at least both parties are willing participants.

My first dose of reality regarding this topic was a bullfight that I went to in Mexico City.

I thought that the matador just waved a red dish cloth at the bull to make them charge. The matador would then have to jump out of the way in a timely manor to the cheers of the crowd.....or else...

So imagine my surprise sitting in an outdoor theatre along with thousands of cervesa drinking fans on a hot sunny afternoon watching the matador entice a very large animal towards the red towel only so it could be stabbed with a steely rod with a bunch of coloured cloth and paper on it.

The bull gets pissed off. It then bleeds from it's shoulders down it's legs. The crowd explodes in a cheer, the matador waves in appreciation, the bull turns around for another pass that ends as poorly as the last one......this procedure continues....again and again...until it's over.

I never went to another bullfight.

It's pretty grizzly, isn't it?

Several years back in Mexico I had quite the time standing outside of a bull fighting arena/ring/whatever convincing a girlfriend that bullfights were not fun events if you're not aware of what really happens. She also thought it was all about a dude stepping out of the way of a raging bull as per kids cartoons and was adamant about wanting to see it.

The Vancouver Humane Society ran a full-page ad in today's TC, with a picture from last year's Luxton Rodeo.

She said support for the cause is growing, boosted by a campaign to boycott the Luxton Pro Rodeo and its sponsoring businesses. Pamela Anderson gave the cause a shout-out on Twitter, the Vancouver Humane Society paid for full-page newspaper ads and at least 10 businesses pulled support for the event.

“Most of the people I’ve heard from against the rodeo are from outside of Langford,” said Mayor Stew Young, noting his community seems to be split 50/50 on the issue. Young said that while he personally doesn’t support events like calf-roping, he does respect the 39-year history the rodeo has in the area and that it is a business.

Visiting Langford?:

Come to Holden West's Cat Swinging Emporium. Ever heard the term "not enough room to swing a cat"? Now your prayers are answered as we have plenty of square footage for all your cat swinging needs. All breeds of cats and all types of rope, twine and cable suitable for all ages and grip strengths. Whether you prefer long swings with elastic bungy or fast-paced windmilling with piano wire, our 39 year history in this municipality means pesky politicians will be minding their own business while we enjoy some good old traditional feline frolicks.

Anyone notice radio ads promoting Langford businesses now refer to the muni as "Lovely Langford?" Bovine wrangling for no good reason aside, I guess it's lovely. But they'll need to think about a serious branding campaign if the municipality continues to allow this event to continue within it's borders.

Calgary Stampede seems to do OK and doesn't harm the reputation of the city I don't believe.

I would like to see them change to maybe more of a horse show type of deal where they have barrel racing and that sort of think.

How about some pie eating, mud wrestling and the wet t-shirt contest, or are those now banned?

Looks like the cow had the last laugh today:

Steer gores cowboy at Luxton rodeo

A cowboy was rushed by ambulance to hospital after he was gored by a steer on the first day of the Luxton Pro Rodeo and Fair in Langford Saturday.

Coleman Kohorst, of Okotoks, Alta., just south of Calgary, was injured during the steer wrestling event just before 3 p.m.

An ambulance that had been on standby was driven into the ring and paramedics tended to Kohorst. Other cowboys ran to the fallen man’s side and the event came to an uncomfortable pause.

Because of protests, maybe?

I have no doubt.  No sponsor is going to attach their name to that anymore.
