Do we know what will replace the structure?

Know it all.

Dirt and/or gravel will be an improvement.

Strike another off the list: the derelict house on Quadra between the White Spot and Borden Mercantile was demolished this morning by a backhoe.

Who owns this property? Is it part of any of the other properties beside it? Pretty sure it was discussed before but I'm too lazy to go looking.

Sure looked like someone had been living there all this time.

Does anyone know the story, historical or future, of the even more decrepit house on Stanley between Pembroke and Gladstone?  Its been sitting their fenced off with roof half taken down for years now.

I think it's owned by Borden and they had some sort of plan in the works a few years back.

nparker - the one with the black roof on the same side of Stanley as Soma Active Health.  Take a walk along the street - it is obvious.

I'll take your word for it. This isn't a part of town I frequent very often.

Technically, the blue tarp did still exist but only on the molecular level.

Soon to be on the list of Long Gone Greats

Vic High is officially on the endangered list at 104 years old.

The district has made a media release stating that a plan is officially green lighted to either tear down and build a new Vic High, or to renovate & restore the current building from the inside out.

The Renovation and restoration costs Millions of more dollars, then to simply build a NEW Vic High.

Based on that, I am going to make a prediction that the school will be replaced. Not only because its Millions of dollars less to do that, but also because the school has to be Bigger and accommodate hundreds of more students. The Fairy Tech Wing is only about 10 years old, so it would be a shame to see that go so soon, but it may be the only option unless they move the students to S.J. Willis for the entire construction of a new school.

Someone could always start a go-fund-me campaign to cover the costs of restoring and seismically updating VHS.

The restore and refurb is going to cost millions more? Gotta build new? Sounds familiar. I would say that have no choice but restore. If they need more space for students, they can just reopen SJ Willis.

S.J. Willis is actually already open & in full operation on  daily basis. Also it is going to be used as a "Temporary" location to house Vic High & Reynolds. Reynolds while getting seismic upgraded, and Vic High while getting replaced or restored.  A NEW and bigger Vic High will cost around 50  Million, while to restore it and rebuild it from the inside while keeping the outside structure will cost 100-110 Million (more then double the cost of a new school) Plus restoring it and upgrading does not solve the issue of needing to expand to accommodate the growing student population.

The current plan is to move the S.J. operations to the Old Burnside School on Jutland, which is getting completely re-done. After the high school fixes are done, S.J. is scheduled to come down for good, as it is in a terrible state. I don't believe they will rebuild a school on the grounds once S.J. is torn down.

anyone have an idea of what the timeline for this will be? 5yrs? 10yrs? soo long in the future that kids currently in school will never see this happen (like how it was with my high school years ago)

Yep, it's just the same song playing over and over again. I'm sure there will be more to come. In the ongoing mission to erase Victoria's essence I'd rank wiping out Vic High somewhere in between the Eaton's Centre project and the JSB project.

From Exploring Victoria's Architecture by Martin Segger:

"The very fine brick detailing articulates a decorative system of corner quoins, pilasters and panels relieved by strong horizontal bands of terracotta and a dominant cornice entablature at the roofline. When built, newspapers of the day boasted that construction costs per square foot exceeded those of the Parliament Buildings..."

Meanwhile, Asheville, NC needs to preserve its historic 1929 high school. Here's a fun quote that could be applied to Victoria, only more so:

“The thing about Asheville High that makes it so unique is when it was built, during the boom era of Asheville, the sky was the limit as to what was imaginable,” Williams, who taught at Asheville High, said.

And here's another fun quote (I know, I know, what the heck could "respect for the past" possibly have to do with Victoria?):

“Historic neighborhood schools are anchors within our communities. They offer students distinctive and unique places to learn. They provide constant and subtle lessons about the history of their town and respect for the past...”

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, Washington, D.C.

The school has plenty of land to expand on while keeping the current building more or less intact. Is the running track somehow more important? Why not build on there? Could easily accommodate a track on the lawn towards Fernwood.

The current track already has a fundraiser kind of thing going for it to replace it with a new one, as well as new seating area and that sort of thing. They have been trying to raise money for the track replacement for quite some time. Not sure how much they have raised, but I think it's over 10,000 so far. If they build a new school, it will go where the current one sits, as I have a feeling they are not going to want to demolish the tech wing which is only about 10 years old. They could save money too on that because they won't have to build new shops as they already exist.

There are two Public input sessions coming up in April, one in the daytime, and one in the evening. They will both be held at the school. That being said, my guess is they want to get the Vic High thing going likely by the Fall, or early next year possibly. If they go for a new school build, I could see it being completed by Fall 2020.
