Sad day for sure..I don't live in Victoria anymore but I worked at the Tudor for 10 years and it was shocking to see the pictures this morning. A lot of good memories there. I would be really suprised if it was re built as a Pub..that corner has condo project written all over it now I would think but who knows.

Could it be both? That huge lot is not so needed anymore, and I can assure you, that liquor store makes good money, even if the pub doesn't. But you can't have one without the other. Condos facing the back and a pub and liquor store facing Esq. Rd.?

The waitress said that people had been putting out cigarettes in some planters adjacent to the outdoor seating area..

That would be a recipe for smouldering fire, dry soil, dry tobacco butts, dead plants in a cedar planter box perhaps. The butt in the planter was also the way the fire was reported to have started at the recent house fire in Oak Bay.

Smokers beware of butts in the box.

Always a possibility, the issue now is that there is 5-6 liquor stores within a 20 minute walk. The liquor store at the Tudor used to make a killing when it was only them and the government store across the street. The liquor license is valuable but actually putting another store there might not be the best business move. It's a big lot and prime real estate so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

BTW... The reason I started the thread here was because of the potential redevelopment that will follow. I fully expect the title of this thread to evolve over time.

I wonder if the guy who discarded his cigarette butt in the planter outside has anything to say?

I spent many an evening there in the seventies, sad to see the old girl go. Lots of good memories, and some pretty foggy ones as well.
Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

That's quick work. Do we assume they have a cause pinpointed?

The biggest travesty of the fire is visible in this photo......

Maybe they can build the seawage solids plant there.

The fact that people drink Pacific Western beer?

or????

if this pub was in Langford say at the Old Westwind Hotel people would have had a chain of people saving the brew as the rest of the buidling was melting aorund them.

I fully expected that the 17 Mile Pub woudl have burned to the ground long before this one

I mentioned a carelessly discarded cigarette as that's what I heard on the radio today, but I've also heard that it was electrical based on a complaint a few days ago that there was a burning smell in the building.

According to this set on Flickr: http://www.flickr.co...ith/9037155733/

there was a fire back there on June 13. No description so I don't know if it was a fire, smoke or what...

Then there's this: http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ photo of this morning's aftermath, but I don't see where the fire would have grown from from the outside, possibly supporting the theory that it was electrical and started inside.

But as I said a lot of assumption. There was even going around today that the owner did it. Know the son that was the managing owner for the family business, wife, two kids, and a shame some people would start spreading BS like that about him.

So with no proof, lots of conjecture and misinformation.

I tried to look up their last restaurant inspection and The Tudor has been removed from the list already.
