Yup. I just had a WTF moment reading that post…

Sometimes you say things that are just beyond all reason.

Ideas sought to design new Cedar Hill Middle School

Replacement school scheduled to be finished by January 2025.

I've got an idea.  do school radically differently.  it's 2021.  schools should not look like 1940.  or even like 1995.

How about a school where the outside is the inside and the inside is the outside?

The three-peat would be sweet but the Reynolds Roadrunners will have to wait for that.

The Colonist Cup high school boys’ soccer championship game between the Roadrunners and Claremont Spartans, scheduled for Tuesday night at UVic, was postponed.

“The game will be postponed until further notice. Reynolds Secondary School is dealing with an emergent school issue and the team is unavailable to play [Tuesday],” Reynolds principal Aaron Norris said in an email.

He was asked to elaborate but said he could not.

“We hope to reschedule the game at a later date,” said Norris.

Claremont athletic director Darren Reisig said every effort will be made to re-schedule the final before the Christmas break, but was unsure if that was possible. Jackie Snell, athletic co-ordinator for School Districts 61-63, said the final is postponed indefinitely and that it could be played in the spring.

The Greater Victoria and Cowichan Valley school boards will not require staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19, while the Sooke board hasn’t yet decided.

The Cowichan Valley board says it made the decision after consulting with public health officials, unions and other groups, noting informal data indicate the rate of vaccination among school district staff is already well over 90 per cent.

That means a vaccine mandate would have limited effect in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in the community or in schools, the board said.

Cowichan Valley School Board chairwoman Candace Spilsbury said voting against a vaccine mandate was a “tremendously hard” choice to make.

“We all want the safest environment possible for our students and staff, and this decision balances what we heard from our medical health officer and all of our partner groups with that primary goal of safety in mind.”

The board could reassess its position if the COVID-19 situation changes, or with advice from health officials.

Greater Victoria also says it will not be pursuing a vaccine mandate for now, but will re-examine the issue if things change.

The Greater Victoria and Cowichan Valley school boards will not require staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19....

Yet I had to be vaccinated or risk being fired from my work-from-home desk job. Clearly the BCTF is a better union.

At least a rational was given along with consultation with health authorities. Also not written in stone.

Greater Victoria also says it will not be pursuing a vaccine mandate for now, but will re-examine the issue if things change.

Maybe they ran the numbers and realized they’d lose too many teachers.

They ran it by the union.  The end.

But BCTF has been smart enough not to take an official position, other than this:

Eighty-two per cent of unionized teachers also support a province-wide vaccine mandate for their profession and all adults working in B.C. schools, the federation added.

“Any vaccine mandate in K to 12 must be province-wide,” said Mooring. “A district by district patchwork approach does not make sense.”

And they took that position AFTER the province said it would be dealt with on a district-by-district case.  Smart.

All school staff in B.C. must provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination status to school districts, according to a public health order issued Monday (Jan. 17).

The order, dated Monday, was uploaded to the provincial government’s website quietly without any formal announcement.

“An employer must request proof of vaccination from each staff member and must keep a record of each staff member’s vaccination status,” the order stated.

There are some valid points in here.

Geoff Johnson: We need to prepare kids to become independent learners

Online learners will need to be intrinsically motivated with equal parts willpower, personal initiative and perseverance, along with the skills needed to adapt to the new situation, Geoff Johnson says

But I would also like to say this:  I'd like my 14-year-old biology student child to be able to learn from the best instructor in North America, not just the only biology teacher at their nearby school.

And we CAN do that online.  Why don't we?

^Learning through a computer screen can after a bit get boring, monotonous. If you have an ounce of attention deficit disorder it’s not gonna work well.

Why go to the concert when you can just watch it online?

my public high school biology lab came complete with a human brain in a jar, dissecting pig foetuses, fish and looking at real human blood under the microscope. Don’t even think I passed that class just went for the labs

And nothing can substitute for the social learning that takes place in the traditional school environment. I am frightened to think of what sort of video-game-playing, basement-dwelling, social misfits would emerge from an entire generation being schooled at home staring at a computer.

Of course, missing from all of this is that children can also learn from socialisation outside the classroom.

I never suggested otherwise. But when 30% of the day is spent going to and from school, and breaks between classes, there is lot that could be says for more online work.

And we are already raising social zombies now anyway.

All the more reason for children to spend less time attached to electronic devices and not more.

We need to see what was said. So the public can decide. Or at least understand.

https://www.castanet...sed-of-bullying

The Greater Victoria School Board has censured and suspended two trustees after allegations of misconduct, including bullying and harassment of staff.

Diane McNally and Rob Paynter have both been relieved of their duties until October, when the next municipal and school board elections will be held.

Paynter on Twitter is pretty left, describes himself as a settler in his bio.
