It's not so much the full size spare, on some AWD/4WD vehicles even a 50% worn tread is enough of a difference to cause damage to the differentials or transfer case.

The owner's manual for the car will spell out what you can and cannot do.  Some will recommend only putting the spare on the front, others will recommend disabling 4WD or the AWD system and possibly the traction/stability control as those systems can be screwed up by one wheel that's turning slightly faster than the others.

I've had 4WD's and AWD's for the last 20 years. In the last 10 I've had 4 Audis' and never had a problem with tire wear issues. The standard rule is if you have to replace a tire and they are all more than 50% worn then you need to replace the opposite tire as well. i.e. both rears or both fronts, I know some folks freak if its more than 5% but I've never heard of a failure. Keep in mind the tires all rotate at different speeds every time you turn a corner and if this was such an issue you would never find a fake spare at all. I blew one of my snow tires last year, the wear on them was around 30% so 70% still good and they had discontinued the version I had so Kal tire provided me with the newer brand and when I asked was told it wasn't an issue. I confirmed with Audi as well. So ended up driving this whole winter with one new and 3 older snows and not a problem.

I know with mine, Subaru recommends no more than a 1/4" difference in circumference, which I think ends up being about 1/32 to 2/32 inch in tread depth.

I also had a tire replaced by Kal and had them stick it on the front as the difference was a little too much.  The front diff on my car is open so I wasn't worried about cooking the LSD (not a drug reference...)

As rjag pointed out, all tires do in fact turn at different speeds when turning.  Whatever the differentials used, the system is designed to allow for some variance in tire rotation speed for turning.  But drive a hundred miles in a straight line and the difference in speed between the L and R tires might be an issue depending on the drivetrain.

Those wimpy spares that come with vehicles are only meant to get you to the nearest service station, yet I have seen the same car driving on one for over a week.

A little aggressive driving around the chicane and the rim would probably fold up.

Trucks have full-size spares. Little passenger cars come with those dinky little things that are indeed meant to get you to a flat repair shop. Meanwhile I've seen people blasting down the highway with them.

Tire rack website

Audi As published in their vehicle owner's manual, "rolling radius of all 4 tires must remain the same" or within 4/32-inch of each other in remaining tread depth. Porsche Cayenne within 30% of the other tire on the same axle's remaining treadwear. Subaru Within 1/4-inch of tire circumference or about 2/32-inch of each other in remaining tread depth.

So it seems that manufacturers has different recommendations....but basically what they say is that if the wear pattern is within 30% then you are fine. I guess the real high milers that do a lot of highway driving may have an issue with the drivetrain if there is much difference...but its also interesting to note that differences in tire pressure can also cause an issue.

Two businesses I noticed closed yesterday.

Pink Bicycle.  Really?  You mean to tell me Monday's and Tuesday are better?

Lumberworld Quadra.  somehow I'm thinking this is a faith-based decision.  Seems odd.

Meat & Bread is closed Sundays as well.

I'm a little surprised how early they close as well. Thought about grabbing dinner there one day but they shut at 5, which seems like a strange time to close - well enough after lunch but right as people are about to get hungry again.

Yes I've rushed in there at 4:45 twice to grab a quick dinner. Not sure why they stay open until 5 and not 6 or 7. Their fixed costs are sunk so all it would cost them is the variable cost of some labor, materials, etc.

Also a strange choice. When else are people shopping for TVs and stereos? I can't imagine Mondays and Tuesdays are big sales days. Again, fixed costs are sunk, so all it would cost you is a couple of employees.

And you're bound to lose business to London Drugs right across the street.

Strange.

Queale Electronics is closed both Saturday and Sunday.  Odd since it's the go-to electronics shop for hobbyists, etc... and you'd think people would be buying bits and pieces on Saturdays.

Sure was when I was a kid!  The go-to place I mean.  Not sure of it was open weekends.

All of those businesses were closed and were at the tire repair shop I take it?

This is the thread to report that no/yes?

Perhaps thread could be re-titled to "Sunday Closures" or such.
