Besides the base, I'd be happy if the Hudson towers looked that good.

A couple of days ago they demolished the original house on the property. I read something a while ago that plans to clear the site will take place at the beginning of September.

A private groundbreaking is taking place tomorrow on-site so, yeah, this project really is a go. Who'd a thought?

The architect is Merrick Architecture but I don't know about the contractor. Perhaps it'll be Knight, given their track record with Wessex Management (the reps for this projects)?

I'd trade them a Camosack Manor for a Silkwind in a heartbeat. This should be a pretty decent first highrise for the suburbs, even if it is much too fat for how tall it is.

Courtesty of Goldstream Gazette:

First highrise breezes into Colwood
By Rudy Haugeneder

Sep 14 2007

The shovels hit the ground Wednesday, kick-starting construction of Colwood’s first condominium highrise building -- the 23-storey SilkWind on Wale Road.

“We need these types of high density development,” a beaming Colwood Mayor Jody Twa said at the ground breaking ceremony.

There is “more to come,” said Twa.

It's a good thing we chased not only the new residents but even the high-density buildings out to the suburbs. Good work Victoria! Perhaps we could name a new suburban highway after some current councilors, or at least name the traffic jams after them.

Let's wait until about a dozen of the things have been booted to the west, then we can really honour the decisions of our councillors.

With words like "take it out to Langford," coming from our councillors, I think this is a part of their master plan ;)

The Beacon in Nanaimo, at 26-storeys, is 76 meters tall so Silkwind will become the tallest building on the Island when completed.

Nanaimo, then Colwood...I suppose Comox will be next to claim the title?

More likely Courtenay, but that whole area is just booming.

Excavation is taking place at this (Monday morning) moment.

I've never liked the sound of trees being knocked down... all that splitting, cracking and the final fall to the ground. :(
