Victoria’s late-night scene goes country with The Duke Saloon

By VibrantVictoria staff

http://vibrantvictor...he-duke-saloon/

“We’re not a nightclub. We’re not a club at all. We’re a saloon, and we are welcoming to absolutely everybody.”

The Duke Saloon, summed up by owner Joel Friesen, opens Friday, August 22 in the former Rehab Nightclub space on Discovery Street at Store Street.

It’s the latest project from the team well known for Darcy’s Pub and Upstairs Lounge on Wharf Street at Bastion Square and the newly opened Darcy’s in Langford.

W. Dale Mallock is the public face behind the investment group that operates the popular beverage spot and heads a company that involves a number of silent investment partners, however, there’s no doubt who the driving force behind The Duke Saloon is. A west coast native who grew up in Sidney, Friesen has been in the bar business for some 16 years with the last five spent eyeing the perfect opportunity for a venue like The Duke (which at one point included the possibility of opening the saloon in Calgary).  Despite years of managing several successful venues, Friesen admits selling his investors on the concept was no cakewalk. Too bad it won't be open somewhat earlier. I feared that "country" would be synonymous with "crap beer" but as they are advertising craft beer availability, I wouldn't mind popping in after work (5 pm) or lunchtime on weekends, but I guess that's not on the cards. Even minimal food would help. Bags of pork scratchings?

A good start.  Depending who you talk to, they had a 30-90 minute line-up tonight.

Didn't you recently point out about another establishment that just recently opened that numbers in the first few weeks don't really count (or something similar to that)?  So why so positive about this place and not the other, that both had early good reception?

BTW, I think this place will do well for a while because it is catching a trend that is resurgent....weird that country (of course, what is called country today is unrecognizable to country music fans of previous decades)  is now hip for the young hipsters........but like all clubs that are surfing the wave of a trend, will have to know when to fold them (to quote an old country song).....

Friday night was AWESOME. It's looks amazing inside. Personally i didn't have to deal with any lines. But i had friends stuck in it all night it was more 90-120.

The reason its gonna be sucessful is that a lot of girls on the island LOVE country music and the ratio of gone country events was over 60% females 19-24. lets just say over the last year i now know a lot more guys enjoying country music.

Country music has tended to fade in and out of popularity over the past few decades. Nothing wrong with cashing in on a trend but I don't recall any clubs maintaining that format over the long term and continually being successful.

A long time Victoria marketing exec makes a point of saying that he advises his clients that only two promotions work in this town and they are grand opening and going out of business sales and he recommends doing both as often as you can!

Sounds like a jaded, old-school marketing exec.  Swans, Sticky Wicket...

The volume of women at Duke is crazy, and obviously where there are women the men will show up and spend lots of money.

I'd say Duke is now the best club in the city (yeah, they say they're not a club, but it is what it is).

I wouldn't consider either one of those a club. In general clubs have short lifespans before they are re-invented. How many times has the club below the Sticky Wicket been rebranded?

I hope they (or the Travelling Smoke Show food truck or the City) put some effort into cleaning the street outside the morning after. Discovery St. was a mess this morning.

This was from gone country earlier in the year. http://instagram.com/p/lyuEUSmogU/

Well Gone Country at upstairs was by far the best night of the month so it makes sense that the Duke just takes its place.

I think it will turn into more of a bar scene after the next two big dt weekends. But i could be wrong on that. Friday night will be there big night of the week for sure.

Where is that? Where Brannigans was?

It's a newspaper ad from the 60's or early 70's.
