...20 years from now people will be defending Promontory and the Falls.
...and the 29-storey Hudson Place tower one.

That one is too tall.
Seriously, never in my life have I revisited a city (or any place) and been disappointed because a surface parking lot had been redeveloped.
What?? They got rid of that parking lot?!? That's TERRIBLE! I LOVED that parking lot!!
Said nobody, ever.
Bozo: But aastra, it's not the redevelopment that's the problem. It's the style of the redevelopment. Too tall & too nice. It ruins the local character.
aastra: So you're saying the parking lot wasn't ruining the local character for all those decades?
Bozo: Stop trying to change the subject.

That one is too tall....
If you're serious, please explain what makes an additional 12 meters too tall.

Obviously the particulars are important and we discuss them endlessly on this board. I'm merely pointing out the inscrutable selectivity of these supposed concerns.
Did you notice how that writer specifically singled out "condo" buildings? Sound familiar?
Five storeys is sufficient (see, for example, the cities of Europe).
For example, see countless lowrise buildings in Victoria, many of which were criticized when they were built for being too tall.
Also, note the use of the word "tallish". Effectively an admission that these menacing buildings actually aren't really very tall.
Who are we kidding? If all new condo buildings were "shortish" (as many of them already are) then he'd probably be complaining about that, too.
The 5-story version of Northern Junk was too tall, lest we frickin' forget.

I was making a joke about how selective & arbitrary the definitions can be. Loosen up.

We truly need a sarcasm font.

But it is too tall.

It's not tall enough and I don't have to give any reasons.

It will loom over everything. Don't you care about the people who live in the rental buildings beside Jack Davis? They moved downtown to get away from tall buildings.

Same thing for the folks who live in North Park Manor.

The people who end up working on the north side of the new office building on Pandora are going to have their view spoiled.

It will cast shadows all over. The shops on lower Johnson will be in perpetual shadow.

I feel the worst for the residents of Oak Bay who will have to think about how tall HP1 is, even if they never see it. Won't anyone please think about the tweed curtain?

It'll kill the world-renowned Hanging Gardens of LoJo.

After they converted the Hudson into apartments there was a terrible attempted murder in there. This tower will have many more apartments, hence many more attempted murders. Is that what you want? Maybe you'd change your tune if you were held accountable for those crimes.

I understand cruise ships are looking to divert to other ports to avoid sightings of HP1

I feel the worst for the residents of Oak Bay who will have to think about how tall HP1 is...
They won't just think it, they'll see it, too (as they make the right turn at Hillside and Blanshard on their way out to shop in Langford).
Posted 19 August 2017 - 01:23 PM
Is that what you want? You want people to see stuff as they make right turns?

Of course, this entire line of reasoning is moot, since who is going to survive after not one, but two 20-storey towers are built in the 800-block Yates/Johnson corridor?
