There's a few kids and teens in my wood building and I never hear a peep.

Kids are fine. They grow up and move out. Adults don't. Cooking their stinky food, playing their loud music, watching TV too loud, dropping only one shoe on the floor, talking too loud on the phone, keeping barking lap dogs...

After 18 years ...maybe.

Little kids can be brutal for neighbours. They run around, jump around, smash things, throw things, etc. It's not fun for neighbours below. At least you can ask an adult to refrain from certain activities after certain hours, but what are you going to say to a mom or dad? Don't let your kid be a kid?

It's kids being kids. They need to live, not be told they can't frolick around their own home. I get that, everyone does. But that doesn't mean everyone wants to live below a family with young children.

Everyone needs the LEARN respect for others. Living anywhere urban has these issues. I live in a SFH and my one neighbour is a crazy idiot that has a laugh you can hear through triple pane glass. She yells to her workmen across the yard who cuts fire wood all day everyday with a table saw.... Are you saying this development has age restrictions?

The beauty of living in Canada is everyone has the right to choose where they live.

Why does it bother you so much that some people don't want to live in a woodframe condo unit below a unit with small children?

Interestingly enough in my situation its the adults that drive me up the walls in my living situation. Scraping chairs on hardwood floors, dropping items at 130am and generally being loud. As much as I would like to argue that living under a family in a wood frame building is fine.. I'm just tired and getting over living under anyone in a wood frame building.

top floors for me from now on

It doesn't bother me. Why does it bother you that people with kids might live in multi family dwellings?

^it's woodframe, I'm fairly certain.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest, I just don't want to be the neighbour below them.

I have never lived in a condo but when I see BBQ's on the balconies I wonder what that might be like for the people who live above a dedicated griller.

Yeah that for sure is a point to make,  wasn't there a lawsuit settled in Vancouver regarding second hand smoke and the impacts on the residents above?

perhaps i'm just making this up but i seem to remember reading it....

Can't be worse than the 2nd hand cigarette smoke wafting in.  Unless you're a vegetarian...

It's funny, it's a heavy smoker in my building that complains about cooking odors...

It's the nasty odour of "doob" wafting up from my neighbour's deck that enrages me...and I thought this stuff was supposed to make you mellow?

The most annoying aspect of multi-family living is partiers.

I have lived in a 15 unit townhouse complex for the past 8 years, and there is seemingly always at least one group of partiers living there who don't seem to have any idea how loud they are at 3am.

Are strats powerless to do anything about individuals who disturb their neighbours?

My strata has a noise bylaw (e.g. "quiet hours" between 10:00 PM & 7:00 AM). Infractions to it can result in fines.

Do they result in fines, though? And who gets the fine, the landlord or the tenant? It just seems to me like I keep hearing of people who have problem neighbours in their buildings but nothing happens as far as the strata enforcing regulations.

I used to sit on strata council for my building and I know we levied fines against owners at that time. I assume the owners went back on their tenants to recover any funds. If unpaid fines accumulate a strata corporation can get a lien against a property which would have to be paid out at the time a strata unit sold.
