Listening to some of my peers express their support for May's speech and approve of her "edginess" really bothers me. Even a local radio host of a modern music station said that he liked May's speech and was glad to see that she wasn't a "robot." Way to be a role model for young listeners, radio personality. Hey kids, if you want to be edgy and look smart, just swear your head off. Let everyone know you're not just a robot but rather a free thinker with an edge.

I suppose that the individuals supporting May's edginess care not for civil and respectful discourse. Apparently being "edgy" and sensationalist trumps cordiality, respect and integrity. Dropping an f-bomb, several times, during a "speech" is not cool, it's not edgy, it's not being human. It's uncalled for, it's blatant disregard for the persons being addressed, and it's behaviour that is unbecoming of a Canadian politician.

You had me until then. Sadly, based on the calibre of most politicians these days, this is precisely the behaviour I expect.  :whyme:

Here's some context that I think you will find interesting:

Quote:

Mr. Trudeau also made a “you’re all pieces of ****” remark. At this point, the bar for cursing and swearing was fairly low and the crowd was receptive.

MacLean's postures that the Green Party has become a vehicle for May's personal career aspirations as it loses relevance in Canada. http://www.macleans....-elizabeth-may/

...But the Greens’ nationwide share of the popular vote stood at 3.91 per cent, which was not only lower than its high-water mark (6.78 per cent in the 2008 election) but lower than in 2006 (4.48 per cent) and in 2004 (4.29 per cent). Recent polls suggest the Greens are riding higher, but that had better pan out in this October’s general election, or May will stand as a less successful Green leader, on average, than — than — does anyone remember the name of the leader she replaced? That’s right. Jim Harris.

But how can I say she’s less successful? She has a seat in Parliament. Jim Harris didn’t. She often gets respectful coverage (this was, I believe, the only column I’ve written in which May was the main subject, and she comes off looking pretty good).

But the Green Party, as a party, has wasted away until now it is basically a wizened life-support apparatus for May’s continued tenure as a member of Parliament. This guy used to keep track of Green Party Electoral District Associations that had lost their status as registered organizations with Elections Canada; by the time he gave up two years ago, it wasn’t looking good for the Greens. The party’s rules called for a leadership review vote in 2010; that got hoisted by a controversial party vote until after the 2011 election. When the vote happened, in 2011 May received more than 94 per cent support for her continued leadership; “turnout” for the online survey of party members was 23 per cent.

Meanwhile, she keeps talking. In 2006 she referred to some abortions as “frivolous.”  She said Stephen Harper’s position on climate change was worse than Neville Chamberlain’s on Hitler. She’s really not sure about Wi-Fi.

Elizabeth May has stripped the Green Party for parts, turning it into a vehicle for the continued advancement of her career as a parliamentarian. She needs that career to be worth promoting. What she says when she’s at creepy weekend social events may be the least of her party’s problems.

Nothing really. But it's only said in close quarters with close friends. You NEVER say it in public. if you say it in public, you have lost control.

Huh. I guess I have way more close friends than I thought!

If I was an employer, and she was my hired employee, I'd fire her for not representing my business well.

Since she's my elected representation to government, I'll fire her in the next election for the same reason.

Grab your pitchfork folks! Someone made a mistake!

This is not acceptable but what it needs is an apology which she's given and that's about it.

You're forgetting the context. Normally you would be right but this cheap knock-off of the American press dinner is all about making fun of yourself. Hence Trudeau's hair bragging and saying "Fuddle duddle yourself" and Mulcair interviewing a caricature of himself followed by a boisterous sing-along by all.

Mays' sin was being incredibly awkward and unfunny.

If you watch the full speech you'll see a woman who is likely more intoxicated than she leads on, slurring her words and making nonsensical statements that were clearly only funny to her drunk mind. She then gets dragged off stage (which, ironically, WAS funny!). She can say all she wants now about how sick she was, how tired she was, and how funny she was trying to be (of course, politicians love to blame anything but their actions and choices), but what we really saw was someone who clearly has issues and who showed the absolute poorest of judgement.

Yeah, those first class flights are brutal.

Do you know that she flies first class? Or is that an assumption?

I'd be suprised if any/many politicians do. Very bad optics.

Number Three was Vancouver East NDP MP Libby Davies, whose spouse, Kimberley Elliott, took nine trips to Ottawa and six to other destinations in Canada, which cost $49,618.09.

Health Minister Rona Ambrose, whose spouse is former rodeo rider and current Toronto stock market guru J.P. Veith, spent $45,476.45 to fly Veith to Ambrose’s Edmonton riding or Ottawa 11 times, and to accompany the minister on other trips eight times.

The MP with the second-highest spousal travel expense was Richard Harris, Conservative MP for the British Columbia riding of Cariboo-Prince George, whose spouse, Anne Phillips, took eight trips to Ottawa and five elsewhere in Canada at a cost of $51,773.63. Harris did not respond to requests for comment.

Those are either first or business class flights. The reason why we don't see photo-ops all the time by passengers in coach is because there are no politicians flying in coach. Otherwise there would be a photo every other day by someone sitting next to Elizabeth May.

Well I'll be. Certainly bad optics as far as I concerned. I'd still actually be suprised if May rode business. She seems to purposefully eschew extravagances on the taxpayer's dime.

There is no way this wasn't pre-planned so being drunk isn't really an excuse. As for her next election, I'd say her base were more than impressed by this performance. Judging by the crowd's response, the press likes it too. Ironic that she's been the one whining about decorum in parliament as she goes on a vulgar rant.

I can't quite put my finger on the reason why the prime minister does not attend these events.

2013:

MPs’ travel costs from Ottawa are booked through a parliamentary travel officer and use a point system, but May said she insisted on flying economy. On some Ottawa-Vancouver flights, she said, she would be in economy class while several other B.C. MPs sat in first class.

“Rarely do I ever see any other MPs in economy,” she said.

May’s receipts also cover newspaper advertising, cleaning bills for her constituency office, room rentals and computer fees.

Hmm, if that's the case then that's great. There's no reason why an MP has to make every flight a business class flight. I can understand the odd time that they need privacy to get some work done or have absolutely depleted themselves physically and need to rest, but 90% of the time flying coach is perfectly fine.

Most MPs fly economy but get upgraded because they have elite status from all the trips. No one serious pays for business class fares.

Those expense claims for spouses seem to say otherwise. The number of flights there should make those spouses elite status as well.

Its unfortunate that this happened in such a public arena, but I don't think its fair to say that she "clearly has issues" based on a one-time slip up that was promptly apologized for.  If she was sick, and took some cold meds, and then drank a glass of wine, she could easily have been pretty blotto without realizing it and made a bit of an ass of herself.  It don't think it means she "has issues" unless you have evidence of it happening a bunch of other times.

She got upset and started raising her voice in a recent CFAX interview. And then she comes out with this latest performance. So yeah, I think there's something here that needs to be addressed.
