We had breakfast at Aura today - best bennies in town IMO.  On the walk home we noticed a lot of lawn chairs being setup along Belleville St. and heard it was for the Pride Parade from Noon to 1PM.  We were headed to Hudson's Bay to do some shopping so I found a window on the second floor.  Purely by accident it was our first Victoria parade.  Here are some highlights and observations.  But first let me say it was packed!  After attending the recent Car Free Day i'd say downtown can be really vibrant and fun.

  • Whatever happened to real parade floats?  Trucks/cars with some balloons or ribbons attached is pretty lame.  So I use the term "float" below loosely.
  • Fancy Carnival type costumes were practically non-existent, although I did spot one!
  • Participants were kinda grouped.  The political group had the Greens, the Liberals, and the NDP.  The Conservatives were nowhere to be found.
  • There were a lot of churches participating.
  • The biggest rainbow flag belonged to "The Flag Shop".
  • The longest rainbow flag belonged to "The First Unitarian Church of Victoria".
  • The hottest float belonged to Camosun College.  Although the Richard Mar School of Hairstyling was a close runner-up.
  • The best float without a doubt belonged to Lure Restaurant.  They made their truck look like a boat and had the coolest rainbow colored balloon entourage following just behind it - really great.

- I understand that giant flag from The Flag Shop is for sale: $1500.
-I saw Lisa Helps almost bail from her skateboard but she made a remarkable recovery. Dressed in shorts and an ordinary t-shirt she was actually one of the least-flamboyantly dressed City councillors.
-The beer garden lineup was daunting--longer than car-free day. Victoria's thirst for beer knows no bound.
-The parade and James Bay event (fair? Exhibition?) was much bigger than in past years. Overall, it seemed quite mainstream, corporate and family friendly. It made me wonder if there will one day be a spin off Pride event that is raunchier, more activist-oriented and more political.

>started in 2013 as a reaction against experiences of oppression during pride events/within queer communities (and serious lack of accountability and respect when reports were made).

I'm not sure what the mean exactly but interesting nonetheless. The fringe is continually moving to the mainstream, being replaced by another fringe.

After reading the TC article, this must have been the Mayor's "float" and entourage.  I didn't include it in the original set because it was, well, uninspiring.  Does anyone recognize the mayor?

Corporate America has figured out that gay couples are generally well educated and without children and thus have a high disposable income. In most cities the pride events have become just another mainstream advertising vehicle.

That's one sad entry for any parade

Saw her go by. She was right behind the truck. Shorts, t-shirt, Converse All Star high-tops, on a skateboard. She actually looked pretty cool. No sign or anything, if you didn't recognize her, you would have not realized it was the mayor going by. Elizabeth May was with the Green group.

I enjoyed being part of the parade but was rather disappointed in BC Transit.

Never thought I'd actually see the day when a pride parade (!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!) was seen as colonialism, racism, corporate capitalism, nationalism, banks, police, and bias towards white, able-bodied, neurotypical, middle-class/upper-class, and cisgender homosexual men.

While I can't argue that Pride festivals haven't become a bastion for corporate shilling and entrepreneurism, I don't see how fracturing into micro-groups is going to serve anyone.

That being said, I haven't attended local Pride events in a number of years for very different and personal reasons.

I could really care less about a person's gayness
Those parades are an entertainment spectacle where we can watch and laugh at them when they prance on by but it seems it's much more to them who cares what uvic says

I'm heterosexual I love T&A let's have a hetero parade

...let's have a hetero parade

In the same way that children ask (in response to Mother's Day and Father's Day) "when is children's day?", the entire world, 364 days a year is a hetero parade. It takes a pretty immature and intellectually devoid person to think there is a need for a "hetero parade", but thanks for demonstrating why there is still a reason for Pride to exist.

Ya I think you've shown more than a few times in this forum that you do in fact care about this.

But thanks for showing us the total opposite of the UVic viewpoint. Thankfully most of the rest of us are somewhere in the middle.

This all just SCREAMS of appropriation of an event that celebrates everyone (even you HB), to.. well to do what? I have to ask, why arent these groups obstructing other events? Why Gay Pride? Becausevthey know that if the leadership of these events spoke out against these actions they would be pulled through a firewprks show of NOT being inclusive.

Hey HB, good for you for liking T&A, I prefer Pecs though, a nice A is good on anyone though so I will agree with you on that. 😉
