Yeah, that's what I meant. Having them there ensured they could keep the traffic moving at the choke point (they likely had another traffic cop along West Saanich Road. I didn't know there were no teens at the choke points on Saturday, I thought there would have been somebody, at least.

Two children were hurt today on a carnival ride at the Saanich Fair. Video.

The mother, Julie-Anne Wood, wrote VV:

"This was at the Saanich fair today at 3:15-ish. My 2 year old daughter and her 3 year old cousin are on this ride. Their car was unfortunately the first one that derailed and crashed into the fence. They could have been killed today. It could have been much worse. Luckily it wasn't. The carnie moved the car to the side, asked all the kids to get off, ran the ride through 2 laps, then loaded it back up with more kids. He wasn't watching when it happened and therefore said no one was hurt. My daughter was hurt.

She had a huge bruise on her forehead and hit her head pretty hard. I took her to the st Johns first aid to get checked. I was to keep an eye on her for a concussion. She is now complaining of a sore neck, which I will be taking her to the doctor first thing tomorrow. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. People need to know they don't check their equipment. The head carnival guy named Jim gave me 8 wristbands for tomorrow or next year, 3 large dragon stuffies and cotton candy. Seemed like he wanted me to keep quiet. I'm doing just the opposite."

Completely as an aside, as is our custom I was dragged to the fair yesterday to perform my annual indulgence in deference to Mrs ASE's love of animals; and I must say the parking situation was an immeasurable improvement over previous years in terms of moving the traffic and above all facilitating exiting the fair grounds. In contrast to last year where it took us nearly 2 hours to hit the pavement we got out yesterday in under 2 minutes.

All the normal complaints:

A good start would be to have a section on the website with "how to get there".

http://saanichfair.ca/officialsite/

Then a discount or deal for bus riders, walkers and bikes would be good.  Or charge for parking, that would encourage car-pooling.  Nobody goes to the PNE and expects free parking.

Yes I think more could be done on the website for sure to inform and potentially alleviate some questions.

After last year I learned the trick to the parking dilemma is to park as close as you possibly can to one of the exits; previously being unaware of the lack of traffic control I had assumed exiting would be the same as exiting any large suburban mall parking lot. Wrong! I emphasize with some of the comments above because last year we wound up parked within 50 meters of the main entrance - a long long way from the exits. Without sufficient flag staff deployed beyond the immediate entrance/exit areas the problem is that drivers are exclusively policing each other in a sense - cutting down and sometimes across interior lanes unexpectedly, and deciding above all if and when to allow someone to merge into a main exit line for example, also from one of the interior lanes. You can well imagine the tempers flaring and boiling over as a consequence.

No doubt the organizers need more traffic control staff, and better training. Many of them are just young teens; and expecting 14-15 year olds to adequately manage the situation involving thousands of cars and frustrated drivers, is asking too much.

As we very slowly exited Saturday along with about 25 other cars onto Stelly's, one slightly beyond middle-aged blow hard, who should have known better, screamed at the kids "That's enough f*****g cars out this time - let us the f*** through!!" As we were barely moving and I could see several other drivers were equally incensed at this pencil-neck pinhead, I put the truck into park and took the opportunity to stroll over and "explain" why his actions and comments were inappropriate and to cut these kids some slack. I then further invited him to step outside of his cute little tonka toy of a sportster to discuss man to man - not scream man to kid - in the event he was still unclear as to why his approach to the situation was probably the wrong one. Fortunately for him common sense, and a very red face, kicked in and he declined. Above all this had the added intended effect of shutting him the hell up.

Ya, it's not the kids' fault, they need better training.  When I was 16 and 17, I worked the parking lot at Western Speedway.  But it was the same 3 or 4 of us every event, we got good at it.  These kids get it thrown at them with no experience.

Is there bicycle parking?

This is Central Saanich, not some Fernwood hippie freak farm. Get him outta here!

http://www.athleticb...tor-venues.html

One acre of surface lot can accommodate 100 cars, with at least two points of ingress/egress. “The more ingress and egress points you have, the more efficient your circulation is going to be for arrival and then leaving that parking lot,” Elmer says. “That said, you can have too many, and then you don’t have a clear order. If you have one surface parking lot, you need at least two points of ingress/egress, as long as they’re clearly delineated.”

http://ops.fhwa.dot....chapter6_04.htm

Regardless of strategy, planners should locate parking area access points as far away as possible from major intersections so that vehicles can exit immediately from the parking areas without disrupting the flow of traffic on the adjacent access road.

To effect rapid parking area unloading, consider providing multiple access points for each parking area.

  • For planning purposes, practitioners may either assume an access point capacity of 900 vehicles per hour per lane (e.g., 4 second headway between vehicles) or use computer traffic simulation software to gain a more precise estimate based on local conditions.
  • An alternate approach involves temporarily striping additional exit lanes, for a nominal distance (e.g., 1000+ feet) plus taper, on the adjacent access road to allow for multiple lanes of traffic out of the parking area. Figure 6-11 illustrates this strategy, implemented for a county fair in rural Dutchess County, New York. This approach works well when the parking area access point is centrally located and accommodates traffic from opposite ends of the parking area

http://www.vtpi.org/tdm/tdm48.htm

If participants travel by automobile which optimistically carry an average of 4 passengers, it requires 12,500 vehicles, and so needs about 100 acres of parking. Assuming there are four access lanes, each carrying a maximum of 1,000 vehicles per hour, it requires more than three hours to fill and empty. As a result, more time is spent travel to and exiting from the stadium than required for a typical sporting event. However, the same number of participants can be transported by bus using a fifth of the parking area and a sixth as much time.

Interesting how mom of the city's media have reported the incident involving the two children. I think only VV and VHF's I Love Downtown Victoria made any mention of it.

Check that.  CTV VI is reporting.

http://vancouverisla...-fair-1.3059311

West Coast Amusements, which operates the rides at the fair, called it a “freak accident” and said staff members inspect the rides every morning.

“The pin came out, broke or something, nobody knows,” said manager Jim Yaremy. “They found the pin that was damaged, but who knows why it was damaged.”

He said the pin has been replaced with a snap pin, which takes much more force to pull out of the track.

“Our guys are very good, very thorough,” he said. “Hopefully it doesn’t happen again and everybody trusts us.”

The Saanich Fair stood by its rides operator, adding that it’s the first time something like this has happened on its grounds.

My phone calls to them (the Fair) this morning went unanswered, by the way.

Glad these guys aren't airplane mechanics. "No one knows why the bolt snapped off, so we just stuck another one in and sent the plane to the runway".

Took the media long enough. Good grief, children could have been killed had the incident occurred a little higher off the ground.
