The police will likely be allowed to view it, but maybe not acquire a copy of it.

That's reasonable. We are talking about arson not photographs of squirrels; we all know the latter are truly a menace to society and require a powerful police response.

A high profile Victoria arsonist was just thrown into the klink for a long, long time after a judge stated that he no longer believes the individual will comply with his probation order nor will he be rehabilitated. And days later we have a major arson incident at Home Depot.

The timing is odd, to say the least.

Or neither.  It's up to HD, not police.

Nparker, it would not be good PR for them if police took the video, then released it or a copy leaked out.  Worldwide news

"Arsonist lights up Home Depot on busy weekend morning, with kids in a class ".

Big companies have policies in place.  It does not always suit the wishes of the local police.

I can guarantee you Home Depot will make the video available to police, but it may not necessarily allow them to obtain a copy.

It would be far more damaging to the company if word leaked out that it was unwilling to cooperate with police to find the person responsible.

Oh for sure. But they had to fly out some of their people, it's going to be in their time frame, not police's.

It's nice to know company policy could potentially allow an arsonist to elude police custody and further endanger property and lives. I guess we really know who controls the world don't we?

You would also have the same right with your home or smartphone video.

If push came to shove they can get a warrant.

And just to clarify, all of this talk about the video and Home Depot policy is pure speculation. None of us know what the police know or don't know, what HD has or has not revealed and how they are or are not cooperating with police.

Agreed. I am quite certain if I had evidence on my cell phone of a crime perpetrated against me or my property, (that in no way incriminated me in the action), I would gladly hand the device over to the police. At the very least I wouldn't hesitate to show it to them.

What I fail to understand is why HD - or any corporation - would not cooperate with the police under these circumstances. Would they really choose company policy over the arrest of someone who had deliberately set out to do them harm?

Let's back up for a moment. We don't know how HD is reacting and what their policies are following events like this.

For all we know they are cooperating fully and are working to provide copies of the video, which may be stored off-site and which may require the efforts of a third party to supply.

Of course Mike. I certainly do not intend to cast any aspersions against Home Depot - I quite like doing business with them! I was simply puzzled when VHF suggested they might choose corporate policy over catching a criminal.

My last post on this subject.

Yes, and I'm just trying to ensure we're all aware that VHF's speculations are only that. HD is likely doing whatever it can to comply with police requests, get their store open, and ensure the public doesn't feel there's any possibility of a repeat incident.

Or Saanich PD has a very clear video tape and already know who the suspect is, where she lives, and is just going to collect some more intelligence before they make an arrest.

She?

I did not want to use "it", so I just chose a gender.  Would you question my phrasing if I had written "he"?   Sounds like you are sexist. #femalearsonistsmatter

Come to think of it, did they ever find out who did the Lumberworld Fire?
