A new venue 'Saint Franks' opened last night at 1320 Broad Street in what used to be the rising star bakery location, I think. You can have a beer and a hot dog, play some pinball and even get a haircut if you feel so inclined. A collaboration of the owners of Victory Barber & Brand and Wheelies Motorcycles. I'm a big fan of these businesses and expect this to be another successful venture. Looks pretty cool.

The description reads like an onion article or a parody on urban hipsterism.  There's a market for that though!

Dogs, broads, barbers, beats and beer in one joint? Brothers can't keep up with that.

On a slightly more serious note (or as serious as one can be with this absurd idea) how can food preparation be conducted in venue full of cut hair? Do you have to sign a waiver that says you cannot send food back if you find a hair in it?

Good question. It looks as though the barber chairs are in a separate glassed in room so maybe that segregates the usages from a health standpoint?

When they built Lacey-Lou's they went to great expense to create a tattoo parlor in the back, glassed in and separated from the food and libations.  It never really worked out, but the new owners obviously saw an opportunity.  Besides that, they're after the hotdog and beer crowd.. so.. me?  And I'm not concerned in the least.

Cap Daily:

Council also is considering what role it will play in future Canada Day celebrations.

In a letter to council’s committee of the whole, Mayor Marianne Alto said “it is evident that increasing amounts of public and private funding will be required to maintain the quality and scope of the Celebration.”

The cost and who pays for it should be considered following next year’s celebration, the letter recommended.

Council also will decide whether Saint Franks—a popular restaurant at 727 Yates—can close an hour later each night, at 2am.

The bar’s owners have petitioned council—and it looks like it’s going to happen. VicPD is on board, noting Saint Franks has been operating “for eight years with no issues.”

Letters explaining the application were sent to 869 neighbouring residents and business owners. Of the 33 letters received in return, 28 were supportive of the 2am closing time and five were opposed.

The sustainable planning and community development committee has recommended council vote in favour, saying the move would have “a positive economic impact on the community.”

Curiously, these bars and liquor-forward restaurants (or in the case of Saint Franks, also a beauty salon) are never a problem for VicPD.

Meaning, the alcohol sales aren’t contributing to crime and disorder, police say.

So why, when crime data is released, we hear that alcohol sales are contributing to crime and disorder, because downtown is a -regional- hub, where people go to drink and get stupid.

So is the concentration of pubs and bars and liquor establishments a problem, or isn’t it? What else would make Victoria’s high crime rate a regional issue, if not the draw of the bars?

Or is the crime not actually a regional issue after all, but a made-in-Victoria phenomenon?

If you look at the crime map, the bars are not a serious issue.

Right.

But for decades, we excused Victoria’s high crime rate and officer overload, to downtown frat boys. Remember old man Randall always going on about the alpha males at bars and clubs, and how they’re the problem?

So if they’re not the problem, what is the cause of all this regional criminality occurring only in Victoria?

This might be part of the answer.

Maybe bars were once a problem.

But if they’re not any more, why is the crime index 3x the size of the others, when so few people are coming in from other municipalities for work? That was the biggest element of this regional draw.

Or are we saying all the criminals live in Oak Bay, and commit crimes only in Victoria?

Anyway, back to Saint Franks. Since they’re just a hop from Victory Barber, can we call Yates/Blanshard the urban lumberjack district?
