So the signs have been broken for 3 months now. They expect Victoria to pay to have them fixed like they want us to replace the floor in the arena

Guess we are not going to have an arena for long since we have no money to repair $£!+.

RG is asking the City to pay $200K to replace the floating floor that they use for special events.

How about we get the monies we are owed by the other municipalities first.

When did the floor request arise?

Actually $235,000. I thought that RG was on the hook for maintenance of the facilities but obviously not. Seems like the taxpayer purchases it, maintains it and then RG keeps the revenue.

According to Victoria records, Saanich ended up paying $452,666 of the $1.8 million pledged. (Saanich paid a partial amount of $101,666 for 2005 and the full amount of $122,000 in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Saanich reduced the grant by $15,000, as it gave a grant to the Greater Victoria Curling Facility Project. In 2009, it stopped paying.)

Esquimalt, which originally promised to contribute if the project went ahead, never made good. After initially endorsing the idea, Esquimalt later rescinded its resolution in favour of one calling on Victoria to make a formal grant application if it wanted the money. No formal grant request was ever received.

If you recall, RG properties didn't originally pay the amounts owing under the operating lease which they agreed to purchase. They asked for and received a deferment from the City. Whether those monies were ever paid is an open question as well.

We have an arena, a hockey team and 15-20 events that occur over the course of a year and have paid very well for that. I didn't think that anyone would claim that this has been a model of a P3 success though.

Well, at least RG runs the property and not the city. Could you imagine if the arena was city run like RAP, Crystal Pool and our theatres?

Stadiums rarely make money, but I'd argue the arena has been one of the City of Victoria's few great accomplishments since 2005.

You could get a lot of tents in there.

I wouldn't put it past Helps, so thank goodness they have contractual obligations with RG and the Royals.

According to my considerable math skills at 9 in the morning, the COV is still owed $1.55 million of the $2.25 million promised by the other municipalities.  Only Oak Bay paid off its promised amount with Saanich, View Royal, and Esquimalt defaulting on their remaining promised payments.  I'm going to try this with my property taxes this year and see how well that will be accepted.

Stars on Ice May 16th

Bob Dylan July 27th

That's all that's scheduled for the arena as of today.  That's pretty slim pickin's.

^ The < 40 demographic doesn't have any disposable income because they are spending it all on their mortgage or rent. The > 65 demographic is living on a fixed income of 2% investment returns. That leaves a fairly limited selection of concert goers and you can only have the same middle aged acts play so often.

That's way too much of a generalization, and you know it. There are a lot of people in those age groups those statements do not apply to, I suspect maybe half of those folks have that situation.

As to why there aren't many shows? Lack of a quality venue, perhaps? Many good shows could sell 10k+ tickets here, and headliners want big numbers as it translates to more profit, but there isn't any building here that can fit that.

^ There have been a handful of shows that have sold out 7K plus seats at SOFMC or that have run for 2 dates but not nearly enough to warrant a larger venue.
