I know this was mentioned in the "retailer news, comings and goings" thread but I think it should have a dedicated thread.  Maybe the admins can move those few posts here?

For now I'm going to hijack Mike's couple of photos and add a bunch of interior shots.  I talked with the manager for a bit about the store.

This Trek store is an extension of the one on Catherine St. but will be primarily a bike rental store.  They'll have regular rental fare as well as the ability to rent those $3K+ electric bikes (the white bikes on the right) and all those high-end bikes on the wall.  The only bikes they're going to sell at this store, exclusively, are those new Trek bikes with the built in head and tail lamps (see last pic).  All other bikes are rentals.  The rest of the store is full of bike merchandise for sale.  They also have a few tables setup almost as art, showing bike parts and tools - note the old anvil.  There is also a bike repair area for tune-ups and minor repair work - major stuff would have to be done at the Catherine store.  It's all not quite finished and they don't have a web site yet but it's getting close.  Window signage that is still to come will make it clear they rent bikes.  I like it and I like how the store flows into the cafe area.  It's great to FINALLY see this space being used!

Thanks for the photos.I think the signage facing north is also very well designed.  Strangely, coming from the south, a casual observer would not even know what is there.  Also i have found the bike racks/parking outside of the store strangely inadequate, but perhaps the 3 stores have something planned...

Gosh I don't want to sound like a parking lover but it's hard to understand a successful bike rental place that isn't in density central that alao has no parking.

Don't worry, I don't think anyone would confuse you for a parking lover.

Any idea of the cost for the rental of an electric bike Gary?

I'm thinking of buying one and would be good to try out a couple beforehand.

Stores that sell them will let you test them out if they have them in stock. Coastal cycles probably has some. I still lean to North Park for customer service excellence and 2 year warranty which is double everyone else.

I would bet that the rentals are geared toward tourists from hotels that will drive them or they will take a taxi.

It has a whole new look!

So they need to take 2 taxis then. This isn't adding up.

Sorry, I didn't ask about rental prices but a quick call to the Trek store on Catherine could probably get you an answer or a forward to this store.  I was talking with the manager a bit about that electric bike and said it was something I would consider when I get older.  He laughed and said that's what most people say, they think it's a great idea - for when they get older.  However, he pointed out its usefulness to commuters today, regardless of your age.  Makes those dreaded hills much less dreaded for one.  He said Trek worked with Shimano on the design of the bike and thought their motors were the most efficient out there, giving the battery a typical 8-hour range, among the longest available.  Having the motor in the crank also made it more balanced.  It's certainly on the high end side price wise but it's probably the case of you get what you pay for.

I'm 34, bike 5,000km a year and would sort of like electric assist for commuting. I'd have no issue with it at all but it would mean I would certainly be obese within a few months.

Taxis?  Parking?  Visitors will walk here from their hotel, at least for those relatively close by.  That's what we did before we moved here - we walked from the Delta.  Even if your hotel was as far away as the Inn at Laurel Point, if your plan is to bike the Goose for the day then this is as good a starting point as any so why not just walk here?  Consider it a good warm up.   :)

  If you set your electric assist to "make me obese" mode (always on) then you might as well get an electric scooter.

Maybe. I've only used one on my wife's cargo bike and it's still a workout, especially with a pack of kids. I'm sure on a hybrid it's a piece of cake.

They've got lots of pretty blue bikes for rent now...

In terms of rental costs, the blue bikes will rent for $25 for 3 hours or $40 for the whole day (8:30AM to 8:30AM the following day).  I'm actually not sure if "whole day" means 24 hours or return it when they open the next day.

The electric bikes and high-end road bikes rent for $75 for 3 hours or $100 for the whole day.

I didn't ask about locks and helmets but I'm sure helmets are included, not sure about locks.  Whenever we've rented bikes in Vancouver both were included.

Blue rental bikes?

Wasn't there a point in recent Victoria history that blue painted bikes were free for anyone to grab and use?  Sort of like an unmanaged, free for all bike share.

The residents of Tent city should be informed that this is no longer true.

Yes and to be honest it was a much nicer colour blue. It matched the blue bridge as well.
