I still think this concerted fireworks thing will be regretted once the dust settles. Forcing everyone to celebrate on Ottawa times is kinda silly without a proper follow-up light show at midnight.

Scariest thing about the 150th Confederation celebrations is that I am old enough to remember the 100th Centennial celebration in 1967 (sigh). But I did get to see the Expo Train and attend the Montreal Expo '67 World's Fair so that is something I suppose....

Just as scary is that Canada's 150th means that we centennial year babies are going to be 50 next year.

PREVIEW

What: Spirit of 150 Victoria — First Night

When: Saturday, 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Where: Inner Harbour

Admission: Free

Information: Spirit150Victoria.ca

Producers of this weekend’s New Year’s Eve celebration are envisioning large-scale fun for Victoria’s biggest year-end party in 20 years.

“We’re going to animate the harbour like it has never been animated before,” said Nick Blasko of event producer Atomique Productions. “We’re trying to paint the harbour in a completely different light — pun intended.”

Atomique Productions, which is producing the event for the Greater Victoria Spirit Committee, planned Spirit of 150 Victoria — First Night to accommodate between 20,000 and 30,000 revellers. The four-and-a-half-hour free celebration, the first New Year’s party of its kind since 1997, wraps at 9:30 p.m. following a fireworks display that Blasko is calling the biggest in the city’s history.

Large video screens will broadcast the performances from key points.

The thing I hate most about "Canada 150" is that sadly I'm old enough to well remember "Canada 100" and visiting the Expo Train both here and in Montreal during Expo '67....it sucks getting older.....

I believe the intent was to time the timing of the fireworks to coincide with Ottawa's when the seat of the national government officially celebrates our 150th year, heh....

Ya, sure, that's what they say.  Yet of the 19 cities that got grants to do this, we (and Yukon) are the only ones lining it up with Ottawa.

Edmonton is doing fireworks at 8:30 and midnight.  Vancouver 9 and midnight.

It's absurd to celebrate the "new year" 3 hours in advance of its arrival in our time zone. Is St. John's NF waiting until 1:30 AM local time to shoot off their fireworks? At least it will be 2017 there if they do.

In fairness, our cops are busy at all the low barrier housing spots, so maybe us regular folks have to do stuff earlier now.

If I thought this had anything to do with the decision to celebrate the new year while still firmly in the old, I might have more understanding, but this idea was dreamed up in Ottawa and they couldn't care less about a backwater like Victoria.

If you are planning any Canada travel next year you might want to order your free National Parks pass.

It was NOT an Ottawa idea. The Victoria organizers came up with it.

They came up with the idea to get money from Ottawa?

Ottawa just sent them money.  But Ottawa did not say you have to do fireworks simultaneous with Ottawa.  Never part of the requirement.  So places like Calgary that also got federal money are certainly not doing early fireworks.

Ending at 9:00 pm gives families with young children a chance to partake of the celebrations before they're home and tucked in by 10 pm,  which includes seniors like myself.  :)

Nobody is being forced to attend if they don't like the timing, as there are plenty of other party's on the go.

Perhaps it should be renamed to "Last Night" since the official celebrations will all be over and done with well before the new year begins.
