Esquimalt's 122-room EconoLodge Inn & Suites on Island Highway at Admirals Road will be repurposed into 96-units of rental housing.

Esquimalt’s 122-room EconoLodge Inn & Suites along the Gorge Waterway will be repurposed into a 96-unit rental complex, Citified has learned.

Developer GMC Projects has submitted plans to the municipality of Esquimalt and seeks rezoning approvals for a mixed-use residential and commercial development at the high-profile confluence of Esquimalt, Songhees First Nation land, Saanich and View Royal on Island Highway at Admirals Road.

Dubbed Portage West, the project will be released into the rental pool in four phases, starting with 13-to-15 studio and one-bedroom units.

“The site is made up of four two-storey buildings and a row of five cabins. Pending successful rezoning approvals, our first phase will repurpose one of the buildings into rental apartments by late summer or early fall of next year,” said Jordan Milne, President of GMC Projects.

The company’s vision for Portage West will see the hotel grounds transformed into a waterfront community with a pool overlooking the Gorge Waterway, a communal kitchen, a clubhouse with a yoga studio, and as part of the last phase, a coffee shop or restaurant. [Full article]

There's a fancy looking website for this project now. Looks like the first phase starts renting in October. Studios for $1025, One-bedrooms from $1450, and 1 bed + den from $1550.

Short of tearing this place down and starting over, was there ever much of chance of it being attractive, yet alone worthy of its location?

To be fair, they are using the slogan "Life is a pool party." Throw in a couple empty Mike's Hard cans, drowned wasps, and severe sunburns and they've nailed the pool aesthetic.

The website is much classier than the apartments.

That seems a bit steep for a re-purposed hotel room lol

If done right, which I’m sure the team here will do, they’ll be pretty nice. And the waterfront location does play into the pricing, for sure.

Really? I am waterfront, with a gym and indoor pool. Complete remodel before moving in and I am at $1K a month. On the Gorge, water views, a bus that comes every 10 minutes, and underground secure parking.

Sorry not worth the asking price.

This stunning layout can be had for just over $1000/month.

Sure there's no in suite laundry, but there are 2 whole closets and a window, perhaps with a lovely view of Craigflower Road!

Such a missed opportunity to redevelop this amazing site into something spectacular.  :whyme:

I think there's enough demand for pet-friendly places that people will be willing to pay those prices.

Aren't all new rentals pet friendly so that is not a unique thing for this property?

I am sure they will rent quickly. It's just disappointing that a slightly modified version of a 1970s motel is the best that we'll see at this site for a long time now.

If you fish for herring it is a short stroll over to the cool Craigflower Bridge. If you need more fishing tackle it is just a short stroll over to Canadian Tire.

If you like a cool beer after a long day of herring fishing, it is only a short stroll to the Four Mile House pub, and from there it is all downhill back to your comfy bed.
