You know, I went here for the first time in ages recently. I guess I had been avoiding it in favor of all the newer places. The Irish Times is usually a madhouse on the weekends but this time we were upstairs in one of the tiny snugs. It was intimate enough for conversation but still exciting with the noise and live music downstairs. The wait staff was competent and the overall decor was surprisingly clean and well-maintained, not dog-eared and run down like a lot of pubs of similar age. Expensive maybe, but not out of line for what you're actually getting.

The have put a few things out that defy the "expensive" tag too.

DAILY:

And I think they have a rotating daily $6 or $6.50 beer feature too.  Full pint.  I know one day it's Guinness, which is quite a deal for that premium beer.

I always look at the drink prices not as $8, but as just $1.50 more than your lesser places.  In that context it does not seem bad.

The staff has always been excellent there, I bet it's a good culture to work in/work for.

Always safer to drink at home from a growler, provided you avoid the few places in town that don't fill to the top.

Legally, anything advertised as a pint must be 20oz

Is that actually the "law," though? I still get 18oz pints at local pubs.

Oh God, who cares.  You can see the container, conduct your own detailed tests at the table if you want.  It's hardly analogous to being ripped off at the gas pump, where you can not accurately judge the pour.

It should be in litres/mL anyway, I thought we adopted the metric system in the 70's?  Has the liquor industry been granted extra time to comply for some reason?

Yup, under federal jurisdiction. There's even an online tool to file complaints on the "Measurement Canada" webpage.

  • A pint contains 20 fl oz (568 ml) in Canada.
  • The limit of error for 20 fl oz is 0.5 fl oz (the foam (head) is not included in the measurement).

Ah, so 19.5oz plus the foam is the lowest legal amount that can be served when selling a glass of beer marketed as a pint?

^ ^ Why complain to the regulator though?  I've been legally drinking for nearly 31 years now, I'm putting my civil cases together.  By the time it is wrapped in court, I'll own Merlins.

Apparently so, at least when you're talking in English. The French word pinte is actually a quart, but when I lived in Montreal most people generally understood you wanted a pint and not a quart. That, or they were shortchanging me because I'm anglophone.

This week, the pub was crowned North America's Irish Pub of the Year at the Irish Pubs Global Awards.

More than 16,000 bars from around the world were nominated for the awards.

"Four [people from] our management team are over in Dublin to accept the award" explained MacNeil.

In France if you want a pint you order a "chope" (pron. 'shop') and it's half a litre, 500ml. Standard draught glass is 250ml and is a 'demi'. The plimsoll line on the glass is below the rim to allow for the head.

Do you have to be in Paris or Ireland to collect those things?
