I got the alert on my phone, Apple 8 roaming on Telus.

Do they not do Amber alerts also?

How do you not bother with LTE?

I don't need it, and it screws with my clock radio at night.

Or like a VHF post

You have to be a Trump supporter, or at least a Doug Ford fan if you want to be saved.  I got an alert since I had signed up as a Conservative to support Kevin O'Leary.

Is there a way to disable it? My phone automatically goes to the fastest tech available.

A work around I discovered at work is to install the Weather Network app, and enable notifications.

My personal Samsung S7 on Bell got the alert.

My work Samsung S5 on bell did not, but about 2 minutes later the weather network app gave an alert.

LTE?

iPhone: Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options   It's in there somewhere.

^OK, it might be, but I'm not looking at disabling it, I'm happy using the fastest tech available.

That's fine, I just don't like listening to this from any speaker that's near my phone

Yeah I get that. But maybe time to update to a new phone, mine doesn't cause any interference.

It's not a phone issue.  "GSM buzz" has been happening since.. well, GSM phones came about.  So I switch to 3G, let it connect to the HSPA network and no more buzz :)

I have a 4 year old ZTE phone i bought in Hawaii that has only ever used a US pre paid sim card. It's now used just as a baby monitor phone, on our wifi. That thing got the alert, I was amazed!

We barely even get cell service on salt spring and I’m pretty darned sure I wasn’t in an LTE zone, but has just left the house for work and the alarm tone interrupted my music in the car even tho my phone is always set to silent, so I was expecting a buzz at best. Went off at 1:55 or whatever it was then a few minutes later went again.

Looks like I need a Samsung S7(and up). If I upgrade is there still a risk of my phone exploding?

My S6 got the alert. No blowing-up recalls on this model either!

^Small, compact

Virtually unbreakable

No passcode

No pocket dialing

Once or twice a week charging

As long as I can outrun lava or a tsunami what's not to like?

In order for emergency alerts to be received on a wireless device three conditions must be met.

The wireless device must be:

An LTE-device like a smartphone (LTE is commonly referred to as “4G LTE”);
Wireless public alerting (WPA)-compatible; and
Connected to an LTE cellular network at the time the emergency alert is issued.

So if you want in on this, then yes.  Otherwise you can probably just listen for the plethora of LTE devices (likely) in your vicinity to go off.  (Ever heard an Amber Alert in an airport?  It's a cacophony.)

I agree that there is nothing wrong with simpler phones that get the job done - this is one job they don't.
