Was anybody else in a public place when the alert went off and heard a voice speaking the alert? I was in Whistler's Olympic Plaza and I heard a female voice announcing the test.

Just heard this now (we live in the Gorge-Selkirk neighborhood): ha, good old Canada: whereas other nations' alert systems sound like - well, alerts - this one as described by Redd42 above is so...."melodic"....nice soothing chimes, an ever-so-polite female voice announcing an 'alert' peppered with 'please' and 'thank you' (how Canadian).

Dammit I want an ALERT to sound like a grown up alert :)

First part should be a loud blood-curdling human scream we all come pre programmed to react to that.

Alertready's back for another test run: 1:55 pm TODAY. If you have a very new cellphone (one that works on the LTE networks), you ought to receive the test alert. You can check your phone's compatibility at alertready.ca. Especially for those with cellphones not on LTE networks, if you'd like simply text alerts about a tsunami, consider: cwarn.org For emails, consider: tsunami-information-ioc@lists.unesco.org btw your older phone might alert you by text alert to new emails received; I've a 10 yr old Fido Samsung phone on a $10/month pay as you go plan for Fido where email text alerts work very nicely most of the time, but I may have been very lucky in being able to set that up (I used their now defunct site email feature to forward cellphone user name emails to a gmail account). I think a tsunami alert's still useful if you notice it within the hour (sooner's much better of course). I suppose you might consider going to an upper floor in a highrise if you lack a means of travelling towards 'higher ground' (hmm, I wonder if Mount Doug would suffice?). jbw

90% of persons in my office received their alert simultaneously. The lone device that did not receive is ancient and likely due for an update :)

Hypothetical: what disaster/event could be so huge as to require a Canada-wide alert? All I can think of is an act of war or maybe an Amber Alert wherein the child may have been taken across borders.

That was a general broadcast, but they can isolate it to geographic areas such as Sooke and Tofino for tsunami alerts etc

Well, I think our planet's going to he** in a handbasket with all this blatant consumerism going on, but if that phone's software is updateable (and not seen as being replaceable), clearly that's the step to take.  [REDUCE, Re-Use, recycle] -- there's a reason why recycle's in last place, as it's by far the least effective step.]

Three of seven newer cellphones tested today on my local news program (channel 27, the only reliable channel I currently receive via powered indoor rabbit ears in my ground floor home surrounded by highrises), did not receive the emergency alert.  So I suppose their software was outdated or, they were older models not on newer high bandwidth networks.  I'm puzzled at why alertready do not use a text alert for users of older cellphones (mine's only ten years old and ought to have decades' of good use remaining).

The test was national and an equipment test only.  Areas affected by the need for an actual emergency message would be the only areas that received the alerts and not other areas.  More or less -- I imagine they use the appropriate cell towers in the affected area to trigger all compatible cellphones.

A pending asteroid strike, a 9/11-type scenario or declaration (or even the threat of) a declaration of a formal state of war or, increasingly, a cyber-attack which might be a prelude to an actual war particularly if its widespread, are a few examples off the top of my head; my sister and brother in law were in Hawaii during the false alarm re: that supposed inbound North Korean IRBM - believe me if one of these alerts were for real there are two self evident truths that will likely emerge, as relayed by them: 1) there will be general panic by many, a sense of inevitably and hopelessness by some and 2) you'll have comparatively little warning, perhaps 30 minutes depending on the nature of the alert, to react or choose a course of action to minimize whatever disaster is in the offing.

Wasn't this alert supposed override silent/vibrate mode and actually make a noise?

I have my phone programmed to "do not disturb". So something happens at night...

I'm on Fido with an iPhone 8+ and didn't receive the alert. Fido told me it was because I was attached to wifi. Well, that's handy.....

On a iPhone with a Telus SIM attached to WiFi and I got the alert just fine.  Maybe they meant you weren't on LTE?

The only alert I would be interested in would be a local event such as a tsunami warning, toxic gases from a Mt. Baker eruption, a total collapse of our aging sewer system and the Sooke Reservoir dam after a major earthquake, and a coordinated attack by Deer Team Six on the residents of the CRD.

Or another building going up blocking the views of the Sooke hills.

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! BIG BROTHER SPEAKS: Another test (national) of the emergency system will occur at 1:55pm today (our time), on: radio, TV, and 'all' wireless devices (I take that to mean smartphones). (no mention of desktop PC's, but really, I think they're missing a major chunk of our population by skipping those). jbw

Well, there's talk of 'amber alerts' for rest home wanderers.  At least, I read an editorial to that effect recently (such wandering's gotta happen several times a month if not weekly, in our greater Victoria region.  If an inmate (resident) is prone to wandering, I say they should be tagged with a gps enabled gadget, perhaps even surgically implanted.

Heh!  I tried signing up for Victoria's auto-dialed or emailed emergency 'alert' system but quickly switched to the email only version (as I was getting late night and overnight auto-calls from their system many times a month).  I soon dropped my subscription on seeing the questionable (to me) character of the alerts being sent so globally.

Should 24/7 cellphone alerts become customary for amber alerts I'll be very glad my ancient clever (not smart) cellphone is likely outside the spamming capability of local governments.  (my original Samsung sgh-f266 broke down when I got it wet, so I bought a couple of used replacements on eBay with which I'm very pleased)

I’m not in favour of alerts you can not opt out of.

 They are called silver alerts.
