It's not going to close. Based on the renderings for this project it's just going to fade away.

Many NIMBY's went orbital today on the FB groups slamming this one; its now on I believe three different "Victoria" groups.

Depending on who comments, and who you believe as a consequence of Wellburn's eventually going away, either......

1) The End of Human Civilization as we know it is Near;

2) God is seriously PO'd and will unleash his Mighty Vengeance upon any and all developers and smote them all out of earthly existence: the corollary to this one is that "all developers are EVIL......!" (Take your pick)

3) "There goes the Neighborhood...." (You knew that one was coming...). And, above all......

4) Virginal pure Victoria is going to - hold on to your hat..... wait for it..............steady........... "...look just like !!!!!!VANCOUVER!!!!!" < - Any second now. Guaranteed. (Zzzzzzzz.....)

Still amazes me after all this time the histrionics and frothy lather this town can get whipped into, and how twisted their collective knickers get over what really are small to medium size projects at best.

Since the day I learned this property had been acquired by a developer I knew a fight was imminent. Between the NPNA and other assorted "anti-gentrification" groups the battle for this proposal is going to make the St. Andrew's School project look like a cake walk.

The funny thing was one of the most "anti-" posters, who must've put in some serious hours today on FB judging by the number of comments he logged, specifically mentioned the "......three excellent neighborhood associations" in the area who would "ensure this one doesn't go quietly": naturally I thought of you and the NPNA in particular, lol.

Pull up a seat and buy some popcorn: this one could be a good show....

CHEK story on Wellburn’s (with NPNA comments): https://www.cheknews...ourhood-568440/

Translation of NPNA's comments: "Development is good except when it's in our neighborhood. Then it's clearly hypercapitalists pitting the proles against each other."

The idea that Wellburns would survive once the Save On opens is ridiculous so it is either an empty dead zone or the building gets redeveloped.

Wew, the comments on Victoria Buzz about this one are something else. First of all their headline is super misleading. Says the building is being demolished for condos when really 49% of it including the facade is being restored and it’s rental apartments, not condos.
Some of the funnier comments is that downtown is becoming a “soulless valley of concrete and steel that never sees the sun” and “stop building condos that no one can afford”. Not sure why anyone would build something they can’t sell.

Interesting story link on the CHEK page cited above where "Berwick pulls plug on $52M retirement complex" in Parksville as the result of a supportive housing facility for the homeless breaking ground a block away.

In local NIMBY-speak any multi-unit residence constructed since 1990 is a rich person's condo. The hysteria really gets ramped up when the SJWs add their own spin to the messaging of course.

I should be used to it by now, but I'm still bewildered by the number of commenters on Facebook who apparently haven't read the article and instead jump to conclusions based on the title. And ya, the VicBuzz headline was a bad one, but the story itself is decent.

new...development...condos...check, check, and check.

Well, you gotta admit, the title should reflect reality and not bogus fiction.

it got 403 comments on victoria buzz facebook. so mission accomplished i guess.

it does have 8 paragraphs about the history of wellburns.

and then yes the story says rentals - contrary to the headline.  of course they could be strata-titled rentals then technically they are condos.

the headline is "105-year-old food market to be shut down and redeveloped into condos" so it's not that far off.

But again that title links the closing of the grocery store to the condos and I think that is incorrect. SoF is going to crush Wellburns to dust.

Who owned the building and property in any event that made the deal with the developer?

The Victoria Buzz comments are interesting. Three different people criticize the project as follows:

"blanding"

"clinical"

"flat, unimaginative"

Do they not realize that the CoV and the neighbourhood groups enforce the blanding that they despise? If you don't like the blanding then stop asking for it.
