Sidney has taken a positive approach to development/density for the past 25 years or so. That being said, it does seem like things are intensifying as of late.

Right, it all changed with Steve Price. The proposal to build The Pier hotel was very contentious, and Sidney Crossing would have never materialized had it not been for Price.

Price, btw, is the father of CFAX news director Ryan Price.

From what I heard there were quite a few written submissions bemoaning the height and lack of "landmark" architecture, but Council approved this project on September 4th. The approved plans are here: http://www.sidney.ca...lans_August.pdf

Is Pam Madoff trying to influence Sidney's architectural legacy now too?

From TC article:

The former town council was accused of maximizing financial return with a building so large and tall it sacrificed Sidney’s small-town character and needs.

Small town character dies after 12 meters in height.

It's within spitting distance of two six-storey buildings, one of which dates back several decades. What's the problem?

Maybe not everyone is a card-carrying member of the Skyscraper Fanboy Club™? Do you want Sidney to turn into Oak Bay or something?

A feud over Sidney’s new fire hall continues to smoulder, as the former and current mayor spar over destruction of a commemorative plaque made for the new Community Safety Building.

Former mayor Steven Price said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith’s decision to destroy the $3,000 plaque six months ago seemed politically motivated. “I still find it hard to believe this council could be this petty, childish and vindictive.”

This comes on the heels of removing the queen’s portrait from the chamber.

The unit count has nudged up to 91 suites. The developer will strata-title the property, although it has yet to be determined whether it will be a rental or a condominium upon completion.

The project displaces Sidney's fire hall which was constructed in 1990 by Roger Saqui Construction, a contractor that operated throughout the region in the 80s and 90s. The company was also involved in the construction of the First Island Financial tower on Fisgard Street.

91-unit mixed-use residential and commercial building begins rising on site of Sidney's old fire hall
