Crikey, Victoria Salsa was maybe the definitive name of this type. No relevance to the place, no relevance to the sport, no relevance whatsoever. A complete non sequitur. And yet it worked.

it was a nod to the ownership having island rights to taco time. still love those soft tacos.

The Kraken is a team name you flirt with to make the internet lose its mind, and then hopefully you choose a sensible name. OTOH I guess they could do worse than Kraken: I really don't see how you would have a problem with your fans being called Krakheads and your venue being called the Krakhouse.

I just hope they choose some different colors and don't go with the boring old black/red combo that has been speculated. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw some Microsoft green in there, like the Seahawks and Sounders.

Seattle Squid
You can still use all the kraken imagery and lore but this has alliteration.

I just looked up where they got the name the Pittsburg Penguins. Apparently they decided to go with "Penguins" because the nick-name of the civic arena was "The Igloo"....well that makes perfect sense, now.... what with igloos being the natural habitat of penguins.

Seattle Space Cadets works.

As does the Seattle Amazon.

Seriously though, Seattle Bytes should have been the name. Or the Megabytes.

Know it all.

As of last month Totems was the highest ranked option per Vegas odds-makers, based in large part on input from a lawyer working with the Seattle group who'd registered the following domains, in alphabetical order:

Seattle Cougars, Seattle Eagles, Seattle Emeralds, Seattle Evergreens, Seattle Firebirds, Seattle Kraken, Seattle Rainiers, Seattle Renegades, Seattle Sea Lions, Seattle Seals, Seattle Sockeyes, Seattle Totems and Seattle Whales.

In a Seattle Times readers poll also in December the most popular fan options were - not surprisingly to me given the history of the name in Seattle hockey circles - the Totems, followed by the Sockeyes.

I never really understood names like The Golden Seals, Ducks, Penguins for hockey teams. As team names they seemed to miss the mark. Not that ducks can't be a little scrappy, (never met a penguin), and seals can get pretty damned troublesome, but seriously, how can they compete against hawks, and panthers, and bears and sharks and other predators?

I can verify penguins can be nasty as well, I was bitten by one.

that must be a hell of a story.

why would any team consider a first nations name like totems?  might be a battle later for it.

Probably because "Totems" has a long hockey history in Seattle: https://en.wikipedia.../Seattle_Totems

Because everyone loves an opportunity to talk about monorails...

Seattle's unnamed NHL franchise has announce a partnership with the Seattle Monorail to upgrade the service and offer free rides to ticket holders on game days. Ticket holders will also have access to free public transit, paid for by NHL Seattle. via https://www.seattlet...r-cars-at-home/

...or maybe the unnamed NHL franchise is the Seattle Monorail

Was chatting with some friends from Seattle last night, one of whom is directly connected to their media / pro sports circles. The latest insider betting according to him is that the new franchise name will be one of the following, in order:

1. Seattle Kraken - apparently the knowledgeable Detroit blogger for the Red Wings, who broke the name of the Vegas franchise before it was publicly known, concurs and also thinks Kraken has the inside track with the Seattle ownership group.

2. Seattle Kraken HC - this is interesting and "yes" HC as in the hockey version of "FC" in football (soccer); that inspired my buddy's Detroit friend - they're actually both Canadians from Ontario each with a ton of NHL contacts - to look into some name registrations with HC suffixes, and what do you know: Seattle Kraken HC was registered privately on Nov. 26, 2019, and just updated on February 20. That latter date stuck out to him because it's the same time that several of the domains - confirmed and known to be owned by the Seattle NHL ownership group - were also updated.

3. Seattle Sockeyes

What he called "tier 2 possible contenders" include the Seattle Sea Lions (ugh), Seattle Metropolitans (an obvious one given its history with Seattle hockey) and finally the Seattle Steelheads (for the same reason essentially as Sockeye's i.e. both are iconic fish found in the region).

Highly unlikely names in the category of "pipe dream" include the Seattle Emeralds and the Seattle Grunge, lol.

Kraken is such an awful name, but it’s guaranteed to get some sort of a sponsorship deal for the rye by the same name.

I personally really liked Metropolitans or Aviators.
