The project will replace an existing 50-unit complex built in 1983.

Any pics of the existing building? I would have thought a 36 year old building would still have some life left in it.

Apparently not. The CRD is knocking down a building of the same vintage in James Bay.

So one has to wonder will today's "affordable housing" projects be built to last longer?

Maybe going from 50 to 139 units is worth scrapping it for.

It just seems a shame not to be able to re-purpose a building that isn't very old.

You mean like move it somewhere?  I don't think it can be renovated to achieve 139 units out of 50.

Hey,how about this? Spend the money building ANOTHER building elsewhere! Then there are 189 units!

Open house for proposed tallest mass timber building on Vancouver Island

Colwood residents can have their say on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m.

https://www.vicnews....ncouver-island/

The Greater Victoria Housing Society has applied for redevelopment to essentially double the size of the Colwood Lodge to 100 affordable housing rental units, with 15 storeys replacing its current four.

The development site will also include a 180-stall outdoor bicycle pavilion and a surface parking lot for the tenants. Plans for a second building of similar size would also be possible in the future.

who are the tenants here?  is that a lot of bikes for 100 units?

Colwood Lodge is a seniors apartment building with rents preset at the door. Tenants are required to fall within a particular income bracket in order to qualify. Built in 1983 it is a wood frame building with 50 units on 4 floors.
