Although Saanich is moving forward with its project quite a while after Victoria set out to build a replacement for its #1 fire hall, both projects could complete in 2023. The CoV, meanwhile, is working towards approvals for its new Johnson Street facility.

Hmm. Maybe Saanich should pursue something similar to CoV with a residential portion of this project. It's in a prime residential area, there a lot of condos around here, more would be welcome.

It loos like the planning process will be lengthy enough as it is, and they need to get going on this thing pretty quick. They're storing vehicles out in Central Saanich!

Given that the Victoria project appears to be stalled I think that getting a new firehall should be priority #1.

Big changes for this project. It's getting a $500,000 grant through the Province's mass timber demonstration program.

That's right, a wooden fire hall! I can see the clickbait articles now...

I was thinking the same thing! Especially when you factor in this paragraph:

"The research projects will study mass timber’s fire performance, the costs relative to steel and concrete, and carbon benefits."  :1954_dancing:

"A researcher surveying the smoking ruins of the firehall said they've gained valuable data about the fire performance of mass timber."

Im going to assume the sudden volume of people loitering outside the fire hall means the fire alarm worked?

Fires are down 40%. But Saanich expands vehicle capacity at this hall by 4x.

https://www.timescol...yal-oak-5581748

Saanich council has given a unanimous nod at a public hearing to an expanded new fire hall in Royal Oak that will replace a structure built in 1978.

The new version of the municipality’s hall No. 2 will be 27,000 square feet, up from 3,800, and accommodate up to 10 firefighters rather than the current four, and eight vehicles rather than the current two. A firefighter-training facility will be part of the development.

They're planning ahead in anticipation of future growth so they won't have to build numerous add-ons to this station. Also, there's a lot of equipment and vehicles that are currently stored outside or in those temporary tent shelters, so moving them indoors will be a benefit.

Future growth of what? If you were to double the Saanich population over the next 30 years, you’ll still have 20% less fires than today. And of course Saanich isn’t growing that fast.

They're consolidating parking here, for sure. Firefighting is now responsible for emergency responses of all kinds. Fires are definitely not what those crews do, for the most part.

I think in the US they've ever begun calling fire crews rescue crews.

.

Those other types of calls are decreasing at an even faster rate than fires.

Serious injury / death car crashes, industrial plant incidents where dangerous conditions persist. Chemical spills etc. All down. And will continue to shrink.

There is very likely little reason that fire trucks even need to park inside in our climate. No other industrial equipment does.

I dunno, I think those vehicles can be easily tampered with if just left hanging around. Drunk kids at 2AM, etc.

They can still be behind a fence.

Look. At the very least, if you are going to spend 30 million on a single fire hall why not put housing above? 150 apartments in a tower here would hardly be intrusive to the neighbourhood.

Yes, archaic/outdated thinking there, for sure.

Victoria is doing it the right way.

The urban stats for fires/fire related deaths have been decreasing, it's true, particularly as new residential builds have all the bells and whistles, safety wise. Fire departments (professional and volunteer) have had to diversify into "first responder/medical" mode to maintain relevance. Pity is that the fire deaths on rural reserves continue to be unacceptably high and many don't have adequate inspections or response capabilities. But also look at the YVR downtown/eastside fires/emergencies lately...

Renaming to rescue services would be a good idea. Also consolidating with paramedics

Paramedics receive considerably less money though.
