Bianca Andreescu is first Canadian woman to reach Rogers Cup final in 50 years

rogers cup is essentially the "canadian open" of tennis.  the final is today at 10:30am. she plays serena.

Interesting facts I did not know:

  • It's the third oldest tournament after Wimbledon and the US Open
  • The tournament was sponsored for a number of years by tobacco brands. In the 1970s, Rothmans International was the chief sponsor, followed by Player's Limited in the 1980s, and then Du Maurier from 1997 to 2000.
  • The events alternate from year to year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto.
  • It was won in 1947 by James Evert, father of famous womens' champ Chris Evert.
  • Last Canadian champs were Robert Bédard in 1958 and Faye Urban in 1969.

i think one year it's like women in toronto while men are in montreal.  then they flip next year.  so both cities get the tournament every year.

Bianca Andreescu gave Serena Williams a pep talk and called her 'a f------ beast' after the American lost the 2019 Rogers Cup final because of injury

Not to take anything away from Bianca but Serena wasn't on her game from the get go. She had something like 8 unforced errors in the 4 games they played. A cynic might think that Serena only played the 20 minutes so that the organizers wouldn't have had to give refunds.

certainly in the last 2 games she was very off hitting some very long balls out and one smash into her own side of the net.  it looked like she was struggling.  her serve was still strong and she dished up some strong winners when she had the chance.

but yes not to take anything away from the winner.

Agree but none of that will ever make make the history books. She won!

today at 9am

A match that presents a complete contrast of styles. The big hitter versus the consistent defender. Both will be able to play their game, but who will come out on top? Caroline Wozniacki is a two-time finalist in New York (2009 and 2014) so she clearly knows her way around the Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, since claiming her first Grand Slam at the 2018 Australian Open, the Dane is yet to reach another quarterfinal at a Slam. She has had to come through two three set matches to reach the third round, but we all know Wozniacki has endless reserves of energy.

Bianca Andreescu is looking mightily impressive on her US Open debut. The Canadian has dominated both her opponents here as she is yet to drop a set. The 19-year-old goes into the event in very good form, having won her home event in Toronto – defeating three top ten players along the way. Andreescu has serious hard court pedigree as she also won Indian Wells back in March.

There is no doubt that this match will be entertaining due to the severe contrast in styles. The pair have met once before: Andreescu defeated Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4, en route to her first ever final in Auckland. The Canadian has been in the much better form, with their respective careers going in opposite directions.

Prediction: Andreescu in straight sets.

through to semi-final now.

The world No. 6 from Mississauga, Ont., downed American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of the China Open today.

The win sets up a showdown between Andreescu, 19, and world No. 4 Naomi Osaka of Japan in the quarterfinals.
