Can any "student" live there? Asking for a friend.

Not sure of the advantage of living well off campus to only being living in a campus like building anyway. And without the university benefit of a resident advisor per floor, janitorial services and campus security. Still an interesting concept that I’d like to see tested. The building itself looks like it was transported from the mid 1970’s UVic campus so it does have that vibe going for it. If the students housing doesn’t work I can see it being converted to homeless housing or possibly a drug rehab centre. Maybe even mental health housing for those in need, not a bad idea considering its proximity to the hospital.

That is sort of the vibe I am getting too. That being said, I rather like the look of the building.

I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it. It’s a bit bleak, awkward and dated but that means it fits in perfectly in that neighbourhood which is full of apartment buildings that match that description. If the materials used and construction is top notch it’ll be good enough.

If UVic’s Clearihue Building and this UVic residence building had a 12 pound baby it would be this project.

Oh yeah, would you look at that. Definitely a UVic campus vibe going on there.

Come on. The aerial image of the immediate neighbourhood suggests this building would be a bit of a departure. It doesn't resemble a standard-issue 1960s/1970s apartment block, and it doesn't resemble a standard-issue 1980s/1990s condo building with "neighbourhood-sensitive" house-like roof elements and other details.

What's the next-newest building in this neighbourhood? Anybody know? It would be interesting to compare with anything built fairly recently.

Not saying it looks like a standard issue 60’s/70’s apartment block or a 1980’s/1990’s condo because obviously it does not but your aerial shot proves my point - other than the height difference and the fact you can tell it’s a rendering it looks as if this building has always been there. It fits in perfectly. Once the new shine wears off you’ll swear this building has been there since the 1980s or 1990s and you’ll hardly notice it, but neither ever take a picture of it or think - wow, it would be cool to live there! Which is fine considering it’s affordable student housing.

As for “neighbourhood sensitive house like roof elements” I can’t think of too many houses with ‘roofs’ like that. If anything the building immediately to it’s right in the aerial shot does a better job trying to mimic pitched roof lines.

In the same neighbourhood is 2020 Richmond, a medical building which could be the older non-residential cousin of this proposal.

Come on, I'm not saying it's a work of art but it seems reasonably fresh to me for this neighbourhood.

(You can tell I'm getting riled up when I say "come on" in consecutive posts in the same thread. Please don't make me blow my top and say it a third time.)

Come on, you're pulling my leg. I'm saying the neighbourhood already has plenty of that stuff. This building is a departure because it doesn't do it.

Also in the immediate neighbourhood is 1745 Leighton - a 1982 condo that could have spawned this project.

Hey Aastra, I got nothing against the 1980’s - it had some of the best music many still consider ‘fresh’ today. And yes that creamy white panelling look fresh today.. As long as it can power washed to keep it that way in years to come and doesn’t turn all grimy and mildewy like so many stucco buildings from the 80s and 90s’. I’m assuming it’s concrete so should be possible. Not everyone ages as gracefully as you Aastra.

Ah, misread that.. well it does have a predominately flat roof like most apartment buildings, but I’ll give it extra points for the recess and overhang.

Come on, I have nothing against the eighties. Mike K. is always telling me how great they were.

FYI: I've already called Geek Squad. They're rushing over to your place right now with a properly adjusted monitor.

I googled “Aastra UVic” as I’m sure you were in some of my UVic classes in the mid to late 80’s.. but it only brought up thousands of VV posts about UVic by someone else who goes by Aastra.

And to prove that VV is a virtual reality trap from which we can not escape... here’s a Sparky post in the Brutalist Buildings thread about having to clean the above mentioned 2020 Richmond:

https://vibrantvicto...toria/?p=288621

Starting at post 9 if that doesn’t link you directly to that one..

Shared kitchens and bathrooms? Pods? I gave that up after first year uni. Awful. I would definitely never have been the customer for this type of housing.

Right behind this proposal two lots over on Belcher.

This building is new enough that it doesn't actually appear in Google Streetview (last update of the block seems to be from 2014)
