What’s the fastest way for a billionaire to double his money? Sell a bunch of millennials dirt in the desert for vastly inflated sums of money.

Telosa is an American eco city idea so grand that they don’t yet know where they’ll put it (note: it’ll go to whichever state gives them the biggest tax break or goodies). Telosa will be a city of five million people, the proponents say, and it’ll have live-in residents by 2030.

sounds alright. starting a new city from scratch beats adding in bits here and there like most places do.

A grand plan sounds great!

Nevada, Arizona or Texas might be good places.

There was a rumour going around in Arizona that Bill Gates had bought up thousands of acres of land to develop this.

Nope. Extreme heat and lack of water is a huge barrier. I'd be thinking north - Wyoming or similar. Lots of space, access to water, more temperate, more interesting.

Wasn’t that tried before… Brasilia?
Even Disney tried that (Celebration).

fascinating concept.

people still want to be able to travel for concerts and museums and shows etc.   arizona does not lack water.  the brand new city will not use the same stream for drinking/cooking as other domestic uses.

A few years ago, Bill Gates has announced plans to build a smart city outside of Buckeye in Arizona.

The American Southwest (east of the LA basin) has no water.

The Colorado River is drying up.

This is a pipe dream for too many reasons to count.

Some place in Wyoming or Montana would work. Ultra low population density, huge tracts of land.

I tell ya, the city experiment is over as far as the 80/20 divide goes. People are going to start moving into smaller communities as we recognize the concentration of employment in central nodes is a 20th century idea whose time has passed. The morning “commute” is an absurdity when, even in Victoria’s case and the muni is unusually highly populated relative to the rest of its regional population, is home to only 20% of the population, and even less if we include Cowichan as a worker feeder into the CRD. 80-85% of the population is dependant on the CoV in some way. That’s not sustainable.

Water done the old way does not work. drinking water is less than 1% in our taps. Water done the correct way is no issue anywhere.

Deserts in the American Southwest can get as little as 3" of water per year from rain. That's not enough to sustain what's being proposed. There is very little aquifer in the Southwest desert regions.

I'm not sure where else you get water from in a region with ... no water?

Atmospheric water generators ... like I said, a pipe dream.

Maybe in a century or two, but none of us will live to see anything more than a small test version that generates little more than a few drops of water.

Another advancement coming soon is over-the-air cellphone and small device charging, essentially creating perpetually-charged devices.

Let's put it this way. If in 1998 you told someone they would have over-the-air internet access within a decade, they'd have called you insane. In 2008 if someone had told you you'd have the equivalent of a 2008 supercomputer in the palm of your hand by 2018, you'd have done the same.

I don't think we should discount technological advancements so quickly.

Spy Black you are assuming the new city will lump all potable water together like they do elsewhere. It does not have to be that way.
