Canada has cracked the top 50 in the FIFA world rankings, climbing three places to No. 48 in the latest numbers.

The Canadian men started the year at No. 72 but have steadily risen thanks to a 11-2-4 record in 2021 that has seen John Herdman’s team make the final round of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Canada’s lone losses have been to the U.S. and Mexico at the Gold Cup. The Canadians have outscored their opposition 52-10 the year.

Canada has a very good chance at qualifying for the 2022 world cup.  Glad to see they are not wasting the careers of Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies.

Canada and soccer is like Jamaica and bobsledding. There better be a movie made about this journey.

Know it all.

I wouldn't classify Canada as Jamaican bobsledders when it comes to soccer. Our women's team is a absolute force and has been quite successful. It is a shame people don't give the women the recognition they deserve.

He also downplayed suggestions that this win over Mexico means Canada could now be considered among the elite nations in CONCACAF.

"Not until we get to Qatar," he said. "We've got to get to Qatar, and that's [what] I am asking this country to do, just keep our feet on the ground. Be Canadian, be humble. We've won nothing yet. We're on a bit of a roll at the minute … but let's keep our feet on the ground, and if we qualify for Qatar, then I think this whole country can celebrate and recognize the achievement."

Very few countries put much thought, effort or money into development of their national female soccer teams.

So when you have the same group of 4 or 8 or 12 powerhouses, compared to mens national teams, there is less interest.

Of the 9 world cups, USA has won 4, and Germany 2.

Strong game tonight vs Honduras and in spite of missing Alphonso Davies and Stephen Eustáquio, Canada remains on top of the group by virtue of a 2-0 away win. Well done gents.....

With results elsewhere tonight, there's now a little daylight in the standings between the top three and Panama and Costa Rica who look like they'll be fighting for that 4th spot (that goes to the playoff) till the end.

Great CONCACAF game Canada-US currently on Sportsnet, with the good guys up 1-0 with ten minutes left; truly entertaining and so nice to finally see after decades of mediocrity the Canadian men a legitimate threat and a force on the world soccer stage.

George Pakos was a member of the first Canadian team ever to play in soccer's World Cup. He was also instrumental in getting Team Canada to that historic breakthrough, scoring half of their goals. His two goals in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying led the national side into the 1986 World Cup. They are two of the most important goals in the history of Canadian soccer. What is most remarkable is that George is one of the few fully amateur players ever to play in the World Cup. He earned most of his 18 Team Canada caps -scoring 10 goals internationally - while on holiday time or unpaid leaves of absence from work. At age 33 George provided one of the greatest Cinderella stories in the history of Canadian sports. Originally cut after the first round of qualifying for the 1986 World Cup, George was called back by Team Canada. He responded in a big way by scoring Canada's lone goal in a key final round road victory that stunned 50,000 Honduran fans. George again scored at St. Johns when Canada beat Honduras 2-1, to advance to soccer's "Big Dance" for the first time ever. George Pakos was named Victoria Male Athlete of the Year for 1986.

2-0 win over El Salvador last night.  And Panama lost.

I think it's very hard for us to miss a berth now.

Canada did well in an environment that is always tough given the heat and rabid home crowds; it was a physical game but well officiated I thought with the ref ignoring one or two rather melodramatic Salvadoran player attempts to embellish Canadian tackles.

The best one - unfortunately seen all too frequently seen in world soccer - occurred when one of the Salvadoran forwards nearly achieved low earth sub-orbital status as a result of an over zealous Canadian defender - until the replay clearly showed no contact occurred whatsoever. In the NHL there is a penalty assessed for "embellishment" and is not uncommon.

Although FIFA refs have the option to issue a yellow card for same offhand I can't recall the last time I saw it. By contrast I was watching a game just the other night between the Washington Caps and the Penguins and the refs assessed TWO embellishment penalties in that game alone.

The only times I ever saw a yellow card for embellishment were if it was a) blatant and b) occured within the penalty area of the other team (i.e. an overly-egregious attempt to draw a penalty).  I suspect having VAR checking penalty calls these days has dialled this behavior back a little, and it's pretty much never called anywhere else on the pitch.

IMO, regardless where on the field it occurs, for truly egregious "acting" it should be called.

The most outrageous, read "hilarious" example, that I ever saw was in the Premier League a few years ago when two players "collided" near midfield and reacted (naturally) as if struck by anti aircraft artillery - until the replay showed neither player's torso/elbow/foot/knee came anywhere within about 18 inches of the other guy. The distance between them was so obvious on the replay they could have held a ping ping match in the gap. Embarrassing. Regardless great job by Les Rouge...now, onward and upward.

If we score just one goal in the World Cup we are at the pinnacle thus far.
