Doesn't anyone eat out anymore?

Industry in crisis, where are all the critics now?

Every place I know has been run off their feet since June. Everyone’s eating out. We’re just coming out of our busiest October ever, hoping for a slower November.

Speaking of reviews, our last Trip Advisor, courtesy of Michael R., of Toronto, Ontario.

“ We went here for a snack after getting off the ferry and were denied a table in the restaurant unless we ordered alcohol or hot food. We wanted a coffee and baked goods but that didn't qualify. We were the only ones there with many empty tables, yet this rigid policy was enforced without exception. It gave us a very bitter welcome taste to Salt Spring.”

Can’t pay my bills off a coffee and muffin in the dining room, bub. Go sit in the cafe. :)
What he fails to understand is that he just got off the ferry, but 60 people were left behind and the empty dining room wasn’t going to be empty long.

Yeah, you know the business. When you’re on the outside looking in things might not make sense. Like the great breakfast/no breakfast divide.

I’m thinking about how to reply, if I do at all. We’ve seen this a hundred million times, I have no doubt the situation was explained to the person, sometimes they just don’t like the answer. He wasn’t being kicked out, there are 12 seats in the cafe he could have had.

It probably happened again this morning, the 9:50 very often leaves cars behind.

Hey, asking for a friend. What’s the great breakfast/no breakfast divide?

Dude, the worst thing known to man: "sorry, we stopped serving breakfast two minutes ago."

Ohhh haha yes indeed, that is the great divide!

At some point the holly gets dumped and the egg pans go to dish and the servers eat the leftover hash browns.

As someone who could eat traditional breakfast foods for any meal and not one to get going early, I know exactly what you mean!

I would be finishing that off instead of the hash browns!

According to Restaurants Canada, 80% of restaurants (In Ontario) are losing money or at break even! I guess that is the story when they want Fed money to continue. IIRC, it was 75% of restaurants in BC at or below water according to the restaurant association here.

Honestly Matt you seem to have your poop together so I would not be surprised that you were in the top tier!

My own observations locally are that things have slowed down since the vaccination mandate came into force. I go out a few times a week and the restaurants I go to are definitely not as busy.

Matt you are isolated from what is happening in Town, perhaps across the island.

Whilst many owners are putting a brave face on it, the Government's aid has been a bandage, the lockdowns, closures and the lack of tourists and tourist dollars will result in many broken balance sheets in 2022.

I won't even get into the staffing issues. It's an industry in crisis.

It was a moot point but folk have lost interest in even discussing it on VV.
