A cop car wizzed by my house last night at around 8 - something you don't see often around here.

Good gravy, you make me feel like I'm from the Bronx or something. Don't get Mike K. started.

I just love artist renditions of completed projects. For all the times I've hoofed it from Oak Bay High to the Cook Street Village, I don't think I've seen this many people on the entire walk much less lollygagging on this particular corner. Other than the Moss Street Paint-in, this new vision seems a little optimistic to me.

^ I agree unless you are planning to radically densify the area that picture will never happen.

Crazy architects. They always figure a new sidewalk design and a water fountain will turn the quietest boulevard into Robson Street on a Saturday night.

It's a shame it's not a restaurant or a pub in that corner building where that property management firm resides. That would attract a hell of a lot more foot traffic.

^They could get rid of that stucco wart and put up a decent flatiron like the one on William St. off Esquimalt Rd.

Man, you just had to show a photo of a Vic West building with a cop car paying a visit, didn't you? Didn't you?

Huh, I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. I guess cop cars in Vic West just blend into the landscape like telephone poles and fire hydrants.

Because people fall for it. Fairfield would be so much nicer if only there was some irrelevant little spot set aside for loitering and whiling away time. The illustration suggests people would line up for their turn on those benches. Illustrations don't lie, do they?

This Fairfield "square" reminds me of the Downtown Eastside's Pigeon Park (the one with the cobblestone sidewalks, benches and large trees on E. Hastings near ~Columbia).

Good point.

Ah, Pigeon Park. Also getting an upgrade. What a hellhole.

I assume that this lot is the one next to Gonzales Pharmacy?

Once-stalled Fairfield development heads to public hearing
Times Colonist
Published: Sunday, March 09, 2008

A Fairfield Road development stalled after buildings were razed on the lot is back on the drawing board and heading for a public hearing.

The City of Victoria agreed to send a ten-unit condominium project at 1857 Fairfield Rd. to a hearing after the architect resubmitted a design using non-combustible construction materials.

Wayne Hollohan, chairman of the Fairfield Community Association land use committee, noted the changes aren't substantial and the delay in the project occurred at the building permit stage.

Architect Franc D'Ambrosio wrote in his submission to council the new project with one- and two-bedroom units will be targeted to first-time and trade-down buyers looking for homes in the $300,000 to $500,000 price range.

The project, near the intersection of Irving Street and across the road from Margaret Jenkins Elementary School, will have an inner courtyard area and room for a small commercial business such as a small café on the ground floor.

Yes, it's the empty lot next to Gonzales Pharmacy where Mount Royal Bagels used to have a shop.

Wayne Hollohan, chairman of the Fairfield Community Association land use committee, noted the changes aren't substantial and the delay in the project occurred at the building permit stage.

Ugh? The development passed the public hearing on April 26, 2006 (Lowe, Madoff and Young voted against) and the property was for sale last summer by Colliers International. They were asking $950,000. The plan included a small retail space on the ground floor (898 sq ft suitable for a café, it says), five units above (1,559 to 1,758 sq ft with "spectacular views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Downtown Victoria, and the Olympic Mountains beyond") and eight covered parking spots.

Perhaps he meant the massing of the building?

Oh, and the address is actually 1827 Fairfield Road, not 1857 (I'm getting tired of all the factual mistakes I've noticed in the local newspapers lately. Is this what media consolidation has given us?).

So I'm looking for the official community street plan. That may not be the appropriate title. But I distinctly remember viewing an online pdf of a map that designates and defines each street type in Fairfield; such as which are the designated arterials and which are not, etc.
If someone out there knows what I'm talking about or knows where I can find this online, could you please - somebody - drop a link here.
Much appreciated. :)

Might be a Fairfield Transportation Plan each neighbourhood has one though they are one of the few docs that are not online and you have to go get one at city hall.

The City has this page:

http://www.victoria....ng_dcmntl.shtml

However the "Fairfield" link is offline as the "plans are being updated". If you check out the PDF for Cathedral Hill you'll see it contains a transportation section providing the same types of info you were looking for.

Thanks Number Six. I was on that page already. I was hoping someone had a direct link for the entire Fairfield transportation plan.
Anyone? Anyone?
