I recall criticism of every aspect of 200 Douglas except the design. Is there record of Council saying anything regarding the visual look of it? It's a pretty standard de Hoog and Kierulf design. If you hate their projects you won't like this one.
The Hilton Garden's architect was Thomas Moore, of Moore Paterson Architects.

And then there was substantial opposition to the design by the JBNA.

Page 3 of the 200 Douglas Thread:
Chris Coleman, city council liaison for James Bay, admits there are a number of issues that council will be looking at, such as the height and design of the building, along with the pitch to twin the end of Simcoe Street in order to access the development’s underground parking.
Actually funny to read that thread. First off it started back in 2007 and they are just finishing the building now
And actually most people on this forum were against the project it would seem. There is quite the history on this place now...

From what I see over the years is most people on this forum are against every project that ever comes along!

You know you've got a tough scene when rabid pro-development types are generally opposed to new projects.

Most people? Every project?
Many people on this forum have a neutral opinion on new or existing projects.
Members participate on a variety of topics, and that is what fuels the "Vibrant" aspect of the forum.
I often document through photographs some of the unique construction projects that will have a lasting impact on the community.
Some projects are controversial, and sometimes I have opinions about a project and will offer alternatives as to it's direction, and that is part my enjoyment of participating on VV.

Speaking of this old project, can we agree that the format of the patios and such is really good? Colourful and alive and the kind of thing that a tourist town needs and should want more of?
I don't even mind the old building itself. Anyway, methinks the easiest way to deal with such a site would be to encourage development on the back parking lot while keeping the frontage pretty much as is. Something like 10 or 11 stories on the parking lot and a) the preservation of the old building, or b) the replacement of the old building with new construction of the same basic form. Maybe a story taller at most. That sort of thing.

One of the nicest tourist bars in town. Good prices and amazing view. I love that spot
