It is also a good reminder that you should never go into the back country alone. Ideally you should go in a group of at least 4 so that if something serious happens one person stays behind with the injured person and the other two hike out. Not enough people take the back country as seriously as they should and people in BC die from this each year. Many, many more are badly injured.
In 1988 I hiked the West Coast Trail in late April, before the season started. We were four of us and started at the same time as a dentist from Edmonton who was an experienced outdoors guy. He motored ahead of us on the first day.
The second day he stumbled into our camp at breakfast. He had chosen a path to try and get to the beach but got stuck in a large blow down area as it became dark. He spent the night sitting on a log because he could not get out of the area. He realized that hiking alone was a bad idea and joined us for the rest of the trip.
