People love markets. They will pay very high prices there. So be it.

They pay extra at restaurants as well, and in fact seek it out and want to pay more.

I do think many people fool themselves that they are getting quality equivalent to what they are paying for a lot of locally produced products

There is zero doubt that a local, in season carrot, strawberry, blackberry, asparagus spear, salad green, etc picked hours before you eat it by someone earning a decent wage and working under sane conditions is superior to a product imported from thousands of kilometres away.

Most people don't know what real food tastes like. Eggs from chickens who get to run around and eat bugs (note - chickens are NOT vegetarians), whip cream from Avalon, berries from Galeys, tree ripened peaches (I so miss that from living in Niagara), local lamb.

A Spanish firm wants to kill one million octopuses a year using 'ice slurry' baths at first-ever factory farm

A proposed commercial octopus farm in Spain has sparked outrage after a leaked plan suggested that the operator intends to kill up to one million of the animals a year by submerging them, alive, in freezing water.

Companies have for years strived to produce octopuses at a commercial scale in captivity, citing growing demand and pressure to find more sustainable alternatives to fishing. But critics argue the creatures are far too smart — and capable of feeling pain — to be raised for food in confined quarters.

The proposed farm at issue would be based in Spain's Canary Islands and run by Nueva Pescanova, a seafood company that boasted in 2019 of having succeeded at not only raising octopuses in captivity but, for the first time, getting them to reproduce.

"We will continue to research how to continue improving the well-being of the octopuses, studying and replicating their natural habitat, with the expectation to be able to sell aquaculture octopus starting in the year 2023," CEO Ignacio González said at the time.

"We will continue to research how to continue improving the well-being of the octopuses, then kill each and every one of them in ice water".

That's the idea.  Probably not much different than any other type of farming.

Mason Street "farm" is a blight on the landscape. Also wasn't the development of the adjacent St. Andrew's property supposed to put them out of business?

I have to admit that my wife is particularly fond of fresh produce from our greenhouse. Building a greenhouse is simply not cost efficient these days but this one came with the house and it is a delightful hobby.

“..More than 11,000 people and growing are calling on the federal government to ban the captive farming of octopuses – a practice that has not yet taken hold in Canada.

Sponsored by federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and backed by the BC SPCA…”: https://www.oakbayne...-octopus-farms/

If octopuses are so smart, why would they let themselves be farmed?

...Octopuses are better than you.

Then the Green Party can count on them during the next federal election.

Remember what I said about the buzz I get after eating a cephalopod, if they are an alien creature who knows what the such a magical dish could hold

Then the Green Party can count on them during the next federal election.

Only if they improve deep underwater internet speeds.

It’s the thumbs. Or lack of them.
