yeah more of that stuff, less cheap souvenier stores. This is going to be a great addition!
Is it too much to say Government St. is experience a renaissance? The new independent coffee shops, Salad Loop, 7-11, Irish Times, The new French bistro around the corner on Courtney, MEC, etc... All this within a short period of time!
... except for buses & streetcars... maybeNow all we need to do is shut central Government St. to vehicular traffic and we're set!

MacNeil confirmed the beer will start flowing Friday, June 27 -- the same weekend as the Tall Ships Festival, JazzFest and Canada Day, not to mention the Fourth of July, which brings droves of Americans a week later.
He purchased the 23,000-square-foot heritage building -- which sits on the site of B.C.'s first school and where the first legislative assembly in the province met on Aug. 12, 1856 -- from its German owners in January 2007, flying to Munich to make the deal. He did not disclose the purchase price, but the building has been assessed at more than $5 million.
He was at work inside within a month and spent nearly a year -- and $750,000 -- to seismically upgrade the building. That project involved drilling 24 25-centimetre holes more than 18 metres into bedrock. He dug out the former basement, which stood only two metres high, and it now houses a modern kitchen with massive coolers and freezers, cooking lines and a bakery that will also make goods for his other pubs.
The pub will seat 320 -- about 70 more than MacNeil's Irish Times -- and there won't be a bad seat in the house.

MacNeil ponders politics
Darron Kloster, Times Colonist

Now that his Herculean task of restoring a heritage building into another pub is nearly complete, Matt MacNeil is considering a run at politics.
The noted publican and original chairman of the Downtown Victoria Business Association said yesterday he isn't ruling out running for the post of Victoria mayor or for city council. (More...)

^Slicker and younger demo perhaps, but not higher end. Unless you mean the Bengal lounge or one of the other fancy hotel pubs which I don't prefer.
