Why wait? I've already had three, and dedicated them to the new place!

This is going to be a great addition!
Is it too much to say Government St. is experience a renaissance? The new independent coffee shops, Salad Loop, 7-11, Irish Times, The new French bistro around the corner on Courtney, MEC, etc... All this within a short period of time!

yeah more of that stuff, less cheap souvenier stores.

Now all we need to do is shut central Government St. to vehicular traffic and we're set!

... except for buses & streetcars... maybe

City buses only, please :) Tourist buses spew far too much junk into the air with the black clouds of exhaust they produce.

I went out this evening in the rain and looked for the wrought iron fence that Matt had shown us pictures of. You'll find it on the south east corner of the intersection of Beach and Dalhousie at the entrance to the Willow Beach Park parking lot (I have no idea what Carl meant by saying it was halfway between GNS and Willows Beach). I'll have to go back in the daylight and look at it more closely but it does seem to be an interesting find.

Apparently the Bard & Banker Pub building had a wrought iron railing along it's parapet when it was first constructed (you can see it in some of the old photos but not in any great detail). It only lasted a few years and was then removed due to the weight. The pieces somehow ended up being part of a fence of two houses on Beach Drive (corner of Beach and Dalhousie).

The wrought iron has an impressive medallion feature that Matt is trying to have recreated with an eye to using it as part of the graphic design in the pub.

No word yet on when the public hearing will occur. It should be fairly soon. Opening day could be as early as June.

The proposal will be heard by Council at City Hall Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. You are allowed to attend and speak to Council on the subject.

...and why has there been interior construction for some time?

Obviously the city has given the go ahead on this project, so why the public hearing if it's only a formality?

The public hearing was strictly for the transfer of the liquor license, not for permission to construct a bar. So yes, Matt may be a bit presumptuous but the application passed Council last night unanimously.

I spoke in favour of it saying no-one has expressed concern about the pub and that so long as the sidewalk patio is well-designed and the amplified music doesn't annoy the neighbours it will be a great addition to the area.

I believe the room in the back is going to be called the Sam Mcgee ...something.. in honor of Robert Service who used to work there.

There's an article in the front page of the business section in the TC.

Can someone link it?

Busy opening for dream pub

MacNeil confirmed the beer will start flowing Friday, June 27 -- the same weekend as the Tall Ships Festival, JazzFest and Canada Day, not to mention the Fourth of July, which brings droves of Americans a week later.

He purchased the 23,000-square-foot heritage building -- which sits on the site of B.C.'s first school and where the first legislative assembly in the province met on Aug. 12, 1856 -- from its German owners in January 2007, flying to Munich to make the deal. He did not disclose the purchase price, but the building has been assessed at more than $5 million.

He was at work inside within a month and spent nearly a year -- and $750,000 -- to seismically upgrade the building. That project involved drilling 24 25-centimetre holes more than 18 metres into bedrock. He dug out the former basement, which stood only two metres high, and it now houses a modern kitchen with massive coolers and freezers, cooking lines and a bakery that will also make goods for his other pubs.

The pub will seat 320 -- about 70 more than MacNeil's Irish Times -- and there won't be a bad seat in the house.

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

That place is going to be a big hit. I'll be there opening night for sure. I hope they serve the Phillips line of beer and all the other local stuff. But I imagine they'll have a lot of good import stuff no one else has.

Is it like the pubs in and around London? Check this link: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/bars/

Right next to Busy opening for dream pub, you can read this, too:

MacNeil ponders politics
Darron Kloster, Times Colonist

Published: Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Now that his Herculean task of restoring a heritage building into another pub is nearly complete, Matt MacNeil is considering a run at politics.

The noted publican and original chairman of the Downtown Victoria Business Association said yesterday he isn't ruling out running for the post of Victoria mayor or for city council. (More...)

I hope it works out for him as his pubs are generally well done.

He has a lot of competition in that area and condo residents will have to walk past a number of other higher end pubs and restaurants to get there.

^Slicker and younger demo perhaps, but not higher end. Unless you mean the Bengal lounge or one of the other fancy hotel pubs which I don't prefer.

I think he meant Monty's.
